Please take a moment to read this important statement from Bishop Mark Eckman regarding Mass attendance for the weekend of January 31–February 1 and how to discern wisely during winter weather conditions.

---------------
Statement of Bishop Mark Eckman Regarding Masses for the Weekend of January 31–February 1

“In light of ongoing winter weather conditions across western Pennsylvania, I am reminding the faithful to prioritize personal health and safety when discerning whether to attend Mass this weekend.

While the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is serious and important, the Church teaches that the obligation does not bind when a person is not reasonably able to get to church. This includes circumstances such as dangerous weather conditions, limited mobility due to age or health, or contagious illness. In such cases, people are automatically dispensed from the obligation.

Following last weekend’s record snowfall, many areas of the diocese continue to experience hazardous conditions, including snow-covered side streets, icy parking lots, and dangerously cold wind chills. Because conditions vary from one community to another, parishioners are encouraged to use prudent judgment when deciding whether to attend Mass.

‘I care about our faithful and I don’t want anyone to get hurt. If the conditions aren’t good, please stay home. At the same time, if you have elderly neighbors or know someone who may need assistance, please remember to check on them.’

Parishioners should consult parish websites, social media pages, or parish offices for updated Mass schedules and local guidance.

Those who are unable to attend Mass in person are encouraged to sanctify the Lord’s Day through prayer, reading Sacred Scripture, participation in a livestreamed or televised Mass, and spiritual communion.”
