A couple of weeks ago, I received a phone call from a brother and new friend named Randy, who is a resident at the nursing home where we minister in Glennville. He called a few days after our last in-person service there to tell me about a regular prayer meeting they hold multiple nights each week.
The format is simple and intimate. They gather together, take prayer requests, and anyone who wants to can pray for whatever — and whoever — is on their heart. Randy invited Brother Brett and Nina along with me and Kristi to come be a part of it and to share a word if we felt led.
This past Tuesday night was our first time attending, and what a sweet time it was.
The service was informal, yet deeply personal. We prayed together both corporately and individually. I had the privilege of holding hands with a dear elderly couple who are aging together there in the nursing home and praying with them.
Brett shared an encouraging word from 1 Timothy that the Lord had laid on his heart, and I also had the opportunity to share. I began by asking everyone what their favorite book of the Bible was. As expected, many said Psalms, John, and other beloved books.
When it came my turn, I told them mine was Revelation.
That answer often surprises people because the book’s apocalyptic imagery can seem intimidating, but I explained that the reason I love Revelation so much is because of its incredible Christology. The magnificent picture it gives us of Jesus Christ. I was able to share from the opening verses of Revelation chapter 1 and point to the many glorious references to who Christ is and the honor, majesty, and reverence shown toward Him throughout the book.
But one of the most beautiful moments of the night came during the prayer time.
One brother prayed, and though none of us could really understand the words he was saying, it was obvious that he was pouring his heart out before God. To most of us, it sounded like unintelligible speech. But Jesus understood every word perfectly, and though we couldn't understand his words, somehow it made perfect sense to us. We understood his heart.
The entire evening became such a beautiful picture of fellowship, prayer, praise, and the sharing of God’s Word. Throughout the service, one song kept coming to my mind:
“There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, And I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord…”
That song came alive Tuesday night.
You could feel it in the room. You could see it on the faces of the people there. The love, the peace, the sincerity, and the presence of God were unmistakable.
We are already looking forward to the next prayer meeting, and we are praying that more people from churches around our area will feel burdened to help minister in these nursing homes.
We truly believe the Lord has started something special here. Something that will continue to grow and bless many people in the days ahead.
We are humbled and grateful to be a small part of what Jesus is doing in Glennville, Reidsville, Statesboro, and through Pure Religion Ministries.
"And for these blessings, We lift our hearts in praise. Without a doubt we’ll know That we have been revived when we shall leave this place."
