From Gary Henry's DAILY FAMILY BIBLE STUDY:

Jesus said the word of God is like seed (Lk. 8:4-15). When “planted” in the heart of an honest and good person, it produces “fruit.” Not every person will respond fruitfully; only those who truly want to obey God. We can’t always know who will and who will not obey the gospel, and even in the case of those who do obey, it is not we, but God who produces the results. Nevertheless, there is work to be done. If the seed is going to be sown in people’s hearts, it is the Lord’s people who must be actively involved. No one else will do it if we do not. As messengers, our job is to take God’s saving truth to those who need it. Our work is sowing the seed of the kingdom.

This week, let’s focus on remembering what our work is...

Excellent motivation & encouragement! The gospel is the greatest gift to ever be given, and our excitement and passion should be overflowing from thanksgiving and indebtedness as we go forth sharing the Good News! How could we not?! We talk excitedly about everything else...our fav sports team, a new fav restaurant, our work, our kids, a new tv show...but the Gospel, that is the power of God in Christ to all those who are perishing, we hesitate and feel embarrassed or awkward about it? May it never be! Paul was compelled! Paul knew how indebted and thankful he was! Paul knew the Power it gave! And so he just couldn’t stop talking about it! May we do so too!

Wow! Love this thought provoking article from Jack Wilkie, author of Church Reset.

“I truly believe there is something better than what we have been typically sold as church. As I read the Scriptures and see the value God placed on the church as His vessel for carrying out His mission, and all of the talk about how He will equip us with power far beyond ourselves to accomplish that work, I can’t help but feel that the corporate, staid, safe version of church prevalent in today’s world is not what God had in mind.

Some of this may be applicable to your situation, some of it may not...The goal is to see where we can do better.

💗What if we took the “one another” commands (love one another, serve one another, give preference to one another) as seriously as the “thou shalt not” commands?

💥What if we realized that passively listening to lessons 3-4 hours per week does not constitute being an active member of the church?

➡️What if we assumed the very serious task of being responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of the people in our church family (Galatians 6:1-2, Hebrews 3:12-14)?

💗What if we embraced God’s strength in our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9-10) by regularly confessing sins and sharing our struggles?

➡️What if we dropped the perfect facade and got to know each other’s lives beyond the superficial “How are you doing?” “Good, you?” “Good” conversations?

💗What if we were all close enough to each other that we would be able to rebuke each other when needed rather than keeping silent or gossiping to others about problems that arise?

🙏🏼What if we lived like we’re dependent on the constant prayers of our church family and they are dependent on ours?

🤲🏻What if we lived with the understanding that our homes, our time, and our resources all belong to God for His purposes as we’ve signed our lives over as living and holy sacrifices (Romans 12:1)?

💗What if we took seriously the command to be hospitable (Romans 12:13)?

👏🏼What if we made evangelism a team effort of living in loving, biblical community and bringing people into it rather than something we all have to try to manage on our own?

😮What if we tried to attract people with the beauty of Jesus rather than programs, events, and services that make them into customers?

➡️What if we measured success by how many people we equip and send rather than how many people we attract?

🔥What if we spent less time talking about the evils of the world and more time reaching out to them in love?

💗What if Sunday was less of a set time to come, worship, and be done (and certainly never go over time) and more of a weekly family reunion around our Father’s table?

🙌🏼What if we acted on the belief that “church” is neither a building nor an event?

❓What if we were willing to put every non-biblical tradition (programs, Sunday evening, Wednesday evening, order of worship, etc.) on the table and review it for its value in carrying out the mission?

💥What if we realized that we are not just a collection of individuals trying to live moral lives so we can go to heaven? What if we realized the Bible itself wasn’t written to individuals but to a peculiar people?

🔥What if we really did love each other in the same extreme, sacrificial manner that Jesus loves the church (John 13:34-35) and treated each other accordingly?”

I can't help but feel that the corporate, staid, safe version of church prevalent in today's world is not what God had in mind.

Ask better Bible questions:

In a sense, there are no bad Bible questions, but there are some questions that are better than others. Here are 5 types of Bible questions we might ask:

1. What is the author's main point(s) in this book?
2. What point was the author making in this specific passage?
3. I've noticed a recurring theme, running through various books of the Bible, what's this theme all about?
4. How does this verse apply to my life?
5. What verses in the Bible speak to this modern issue?

Bible study should always begin with questions like 1-3. Only then will we know how to answer questions like 4 or 5. Furthermore, it would probably be best if:

70% of questions were like 1-3
25% of questions were like 4
5% of questions were like 5

If most of our Bible questions are like questions 4-5, then we're likely doing Bible study backwards. Let's start asking better questions.

“We also owe a debt of love to others to share the gospel with them. We have received a gift we can’t pay for; the best we can do is pass it on!”

“Disciple making is a lifestyle...Practicing the Great Commission means walking people through the process of maturing as a Christian. Disciples are handmade. If you are a mature Christian, pray that God would help you choose someone (or two or three) to disciple. Tell them you want to help them grow in their walk with Christ and ask them to get together with you regularly to study and pray. Teach them what it means to live for Christ and let them know that you expect them to grow to the point of exercising their gifts to strengthen the church...they must be taught to continue the cycle. The end goal is not to keep feeding them forever but to have them turn and feed others.” Church Reset by Jack Wilkie, pg 136
