Newbury Park Adventist Academy is striving to bring back the joy of reading for students through a new independent reading program that launched last summer and continued throughout the 2025-2026 academic year.

As a longtime educator, Mike Taylor, NPAA English and journalism teacher, has noticed with each new generation that students are reading less.

“We came up with the idea of instituting an independent reading program where the kids can choose any book that catches their interest—fiction or non-fiction,” Taylor said. “They have approximately two months to read the book, and then they're required to do a project about the book from a variety of options that appeals to their different learning modalities.”

In this episode of Save It, Spend It, Share It, Pastor John Strehle explores how anger develops, how to recognize emotional triggers, and how to diffuse conflict before it escalates. The conversation focuses on practical ways to approach arguments with intention, shift from defensiveness to curiosity, and better understand others’ perspectives while cultivating emotional awareness, fostering healthier communication, and using moments of tension as opportunities for personal and relational growth.

Characteristic 8 • “Prayerful dependence” is the most essential ingredient in a healthy church. Prayer is not just a ministry; it is the lifeblood that saturates everything we do. Like salt, it permeates strategy, preaching, leadership, and mission. While other traits describe structures, prayer describes our posture before God. Jesus said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). The early church understood this, devoting themselves constantly to prayer before acting, planning, or preaching (Acts 1:14).

We were so glad to see everyone who joined us for EQUIP26 this Sabbath! We‘re grateful to those who who attended and the volunteers and planning team who made it happen. A special shoutout to the T4C group at Vallejo Drive who helped keep the flow for all of the sessions at EQUIP26! You likely saw our youngest volunteers directing people to their classes, handing out materials, and making sure the speakers kept to their time.

Can’t wait to see how these tools and resources taken from EQUIP26 will be used to strengthen ministry happening at your local churches 😃
