James, an Irish lad who was going to school in England, knew nothing about Glen Rose, Texas, when he was placed at Glen Lake Camp by Camp USA in 2017.
Madison, a Glen Rose native and a second-year summer staff counselor in 2017, knew from the time she was a young camper that she wanted to come back as a counselor. “Glen Lake Camp just called to my heart.”
Being from the small town of Glen Rose, Madison knew most of her peers well, and she did not have the opportunity to meet new people often, or experience the need to stray far from her comfort zone. With her shy personality, she thrived on the predictability and the routine.
As a summer staff counselor, however, Madison felt a different confidence. “It was easier at camp to talk to others because Glen Lake brought me out of my shell and helped me be comfortable approaching people I didn’t know.”
One of those people who Madison was not afraid to approach was James. From the moment they met on the first day of staff training, she knew he was someone special. What started out as conversations while making friendship bracelets on the rocking chairs outside Turner Hall, turned into a long-distance relationship when James went back to England after camp was over. Four years later, James and Madison were married in Glen Rose and soon moved to England.
In April of 2026, baby Tadhg (pronounced Tῑg) came to Glen Lake Camp for the first time to see the place where “time seems to move slower and there is opportunity to develop deep and meaningful friendships.”
Madison says she is grateful for Glen Lake Camp because, “I was able to hear God’s voice clearer at camp and I listened. I really began to trust in God at Glen Lake Camp and I carried that with me as I grew in new directions by getting married, moving to a new country, experiencing motherhood, and being confident enough to make new friends in a place far away from all my family.” Madison agreed with Carly Payne’s comment about Glen Lake Camp being a “thinly veiled, sacred place”.
“James and I can’t wait for Tadhg to be old enough to be a camper here and of course we want to come as volunteers!”
