The Religious Communities of Glen Rock would like to THANK EVERYONE - the parade organizers, borough residents and others - for their generosity in helping to feed those in need. A truck full of food was donated to our friends at the Social Service Assoc. of Ridgewood and Vicinity. Over $1,300 in cash was collected and will be sent to the Center for Food Action. Thanks especially to our members from Glen Rock Community Church, the Hindu Community and the Baha’i Community for organizing this year’s efforts. Special thanks to the Glen Rock Gurudwara for providing the truck, the Glen Rock Guild for donating 250 pounds to commemorate our 250 celebration and of course, thank you to Kilroy’s for the carts!

The Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Ridgewood and Glen Rock acknowledges the importance of Juneteenth as it commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented until the end of the Civil War. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Texas and announced the end of the Civil War and that more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as Juneteenth by the newly freed people in Texas and is viewed by millions as a second Independence Day.
In 2020 Juneteenth became a NJ state holiday and in 2021 it became a federal holiday. NJ observes the holiday on the third Friday of June each year.
