Once Saved, Always Saved? Part 11
There are two verses that our website proposes to be definitive about the impossibility of salvation. Both of these deal with outside forces – that is forces other than ourselves. We are free moral agents. We either choose to walk in God’s ways or Satan’s ways. But neither man (Satan’s agent) or Satan can take us from God – that is our decision and ours alone.
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, SHALL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38
"My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand." John 10:29
Joshua said it best, Josh 24:15 And if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
The Holy Spirit guided Paul as he spoke about this choice. Rom 6:16
Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you
were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Now if we are slaves, we must be obedient to our master. If we serve our master, he will reward us (Mt 18.32-35; Mt 24.48-51;Mt 25.30). In all of these teachings about the kingdom of God, the wicked slave – the one who failed to do his Master’s will – is punished. In addition, in all of the parables, we can easily understand that God is represented by the Master. The slaves were all the Master’s slaves and not the slaves of someone else. Thus, God is telling us clearly we must be obedient slaves or we will be punished.
". . .for he hath said, I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:5
". . . and, lo, I am with you ALWAY, even unto the end of the world. Amen." Matthew 28:20
When the website declares “Jesus will NEVER leave us” we recognize this truth, however, we can leave Jesus. He will be just where he always was and is – waiting for us to come back. The website continues “Jesus promised He will never leave us. Jesus could not say this if there was even a chance of losing our salvation.” And again, the website fails to realize that although Jesus will never leave us, we can leave him – Judas did – Demas did – and we can. Notice carefully what Jesus said in these verses. He is constant – we are the variable!
