Relief organizations are mobilizing to help across the Caribbean after Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, tying for the strongest landfalling Atlantic hurricane in history.

Our thoughts are with everyone in Jamaica and across the region impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

National VOAD members and partners are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating to support affected communities. Many important conversations about this response are happening right now at our Fall Members Meeting, as our network comes together to share information, align resources, and prepare to assist in recovery efforts.

Join us in prayer for people in Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic as they prepare for Hurricane Melissa.

Melissa is a Category 5 storm and is expected to have a catastrophic impact on Jamaica, with up to 30 inches of rain and a 13-foot storm surge predicted. Significant flooding and damage from Melissa have already occurred in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with additional impacts expected in both countries and in Cuba. We pray especially for Haiti, as Melissa’s impact will worsen the hunger crisis experienced by more than half of the country.

As the needs of those impacted by Hurricane Melissa become clear over the coming days, UMCOR is prepared to support the response efforts of our Methodist partners in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
