As recovery and damage assessments continue following the powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia Aug. 10, 2026, reports are providing a clearer picture of the impact on Cumberland Presbyterian churches and institutions. Ministry Council member Angélica Poveda, who is in Colombia, reported Aug. 12 that a building assessment of Colegio Americano in Cali found no structural problems, with only a few areas requiring minor repairs. “Thank God everything is fine,” Poveda said. The chapel, Nueva Esperanza Cumberland Presbyterian Church, sustained damage to its facade, where a portion has become loose and is hanging. Repairs are expected Aug. 13 to remove or secure the damaged material and prevent injuries. Damage has also been reported at Cumberland Presbyterian churches in Pereira, Rionegro, Armenia and Cali Central. Church leaders continue assessing conditions and needs following the earthquake.
