Gilmanton Gravestone Cleaners A group of volunteers who work under the direction of the Gilmanton Cemetery Trustees - "Do No Harm" It is interesting and very rewarding work.

We are a group of volunteers that have been trained in the proper cleaning and preservation of gravestones. We work for the Gilmanton Cemetery Trustees, have their permission to work in the Gilmanton owned cemeteries and update them on the conditions of things we see. We are looking for people who are serious in learning how to preserve our history and then work with us to achieve that goal. We wi

ll be more than happy to answer any questions and are always looking for information on our town's history. This site will show pictures of stones that we work on, some history as it is related to the stones and the cemeteries as well as some trivia questions. We hope to show the transformation of some of the stones that we clean.... Come join us!

Today, we started repairing some new stones.

The first two stones were epoxied and clamped, next week, we will infill the cracks and remove the clamps.

The other pictures were of stones that were not in their base and the bottom of the stones were broken so we found some of the pieces and epoxied them and clamped them. We dug up one of the bases and reset it so next week, we will reset the stones back into their bases.

We talked about "tenting" the top of this obelisk so that we could get the "biologicals" such as the lichen, off of the top of the monument. We used D/2 and then covered the top with our technologically advanced black, heavy duty trash bag and secured it to the stone. It will stay on the stone for at least 2 or 3 weeks.

Using this method, we will create a controlled environment around a stone monument which will maintain moisture and temperature aiding in the effectiveness of the D/2. We used this method in Beech Grove Cemetery several years ago and it was very effective.

The stones in this cemetery are dire need of being straightened so today, we re-set 7 stones. These stones were slate and soapstone. Several of them we actually pulled from the ground, set a base and then re-installed the stones making them secure and straight.

We were back at the Tibbetts Cemetery again, cleaning stones and resetting them. There are some photos of a monument in there that will be interesting to watch the transformation. We reset some stones from some field stones with crude initial engravings to some larger stones with some good size bases.

On a sad and side note, one of our younger Volunteers completed her community service hours for school. She was a great worker, really helped our progress this year and was a great part of our team, she'll be missed but we wish her the best in her Senior year! If you are interested in working with us to get your community service hours, are at least 16 years of age, are motivated and want to learn some history and new skills, we would be more than happy to talk with you and maybe helping you with your community service hours.

Before the 4th of July, we were cleaning in Hillside Cemetery off of Edgerly Road and one of our Volunteers found what looked like a foot stone. It was a piece of white marble with the initials A E G. We did some research and found that the foot stone belonged to an Albert E. Glidden, the 3 month old son of D.S. & E.M. Glidden. In checking out his stone and the area around, there was no indication that any foot stone had been placed there or anywhere else in that plot. On Saturday, that was fixed and we set Baby Albert's foot stone.

From time to time, we go back to the different cemeteries that we worked in to check on the stones that we cleaned, reset or repair. Last week, we went to the Beech Grove Cemetery which is off of Route 107, just south of the Corners. We worked in this cemetery in 2023 and 2024 and the results of our work still look good. If you remember what they looked like before (or if you don't and want to check our 2023/24 Facebook posts) you would be amazed!!
