On this date in 1777, the US flag was adopted. The Flag Resolution stated "That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." On August 3, 1949 Flag Day was established by an act of congress.
