FYI - I am just passing along information, about the four free COVID test that the Federal Government is making available for FREE to every residental address in the U.S. (if requested) - see the link below. The Postal Service is delivering one shipment of 4 COVID tests per residential address. Enter your name, address and email at www.usps.com/covidtest to request a shipment. It is live now! I just completed mine. If you have strong feelings on either side of the COVID test and the politics of it...keep it to yourself, go tell it to Oprah...just don't tell me because I don't want to hear it; I am simply passing along information to individuals that would like to get the home test. All my best, Craig Johnson

As the sun sets on this Memorial Day and the starry dark night embraces us all - give thanks once more for the enormous sacrifice made by those that we've honored today.

The Oakley Cemetery Association has started a project to identify all veterans that are interred in Oakley Cemetery. Please click on the following link for a draft version listing many of the veterans buried in our beloved cemetery. NOTE: this is NOT a final list but just the beginning of what will eventually list their name, DOB, DOD, branch of service, rank, conflict they served in, medals/accommodations, pic of their military marker, etc... There are still eight letters of the alphabet that I haven't completed yet.

I wanted to share the first draft with you and to ask for your assistance. If anyone is missing from that list and/or you have information about a veteran that you would like to share, please email the information to [email protected] in the SUBJECT line of the email reference the Oakley Veteran Project and provide the update or any information that you would like to share. Please be patient as we work though the process of identifying our veterans. We want to take the time to do this right, so that we honor their memory and contribution to our great country.

Did you know…

Memorial Day, initially referred to as Decoration Day, was observed by many communities after the Civil War, when the nation suffered more than 620,000 military deaths, roughly 2 percent of the total population at the time. John A. Logan, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of Republic, chose May 30, 1868, as a day to decorate the graves of Union troops across the nation. From this beginning, Memorial Day is now designated as an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who have died in service to the United States during peace and war. Veterans Day, November 11, celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history

Over the last decade, as more soldiers have given their time, their skills, and their lives overseas, the spirit and meaning of Memorial Day have taken on greater significance to many Americans.

Today, the American flag should be hung at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day, then raised to the top of the staff.

And since 2000, when the U.S. Congress passed legislation, all Americans are encouraged to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.

Many of you are enjoying the official start to summer and finally being able to return to a “new normal” as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. I pray that you and your family are safe and healthy. At 3 p.m. this afternoon, pause for a moment and give thanks to those that made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy this holiday weekend.

God bless...

🌳🌳 TREE BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT UPDATE 🌳🌳

Please stop by the cemetery to see the new Crepe Myrtles that were planted last week. If you haven't had a chance, well here's a sneak peek. In the first picture, I placed a pink mark under the tree as it is a little hard to see.

100 crepe myrtle trees were planted along the east and back border of the cemetery and around the entrance. They were planted early enough that they should bloom this spring.

Please join us in helping establish this living memorial, by purchasing one of the trees in memory of a friend or family member. The crepe myrtles cost $50 and you can include this memorial donation and information on the donation form along with your annual donation to the maintenance fund.

Contribution Form attached.

Text version of the Oakley CemeteryAnnual Fund Donation Letter

January 31, 2020

Dear Oakley Cemetery Family Members, and Friends:

First and foremost, we would like to thank you for your generous contributions to Oakley Cemetery. We could not maintain our beautiful grounds without your continued support. As we begin our fund drive for the maintenance of preserving and maintaining the historical integrity and beauty of Oakley Cemetery, we ask that you join us in this endeavor.

The board approved a beautification project for the cemetery and in the coming weeks, the boundaries of the cemetery will be cleaned to improve the beauty and charm of the property. This week, 100 seven-foot crepe myrtles were planted around the east and back border of the property and at the main entrance of the cemetery. Please join us in helping establish this living memorial, by purchasing one of the trees in memory of a friend or family member. The crepe myrtles cost $50 and you can include this memorial donation and information on the donation form along with your annual donation to the maintenance fund.

Lou Bufkin, Sharon Dellinger, Dale McLemore, Pat Scott, and Bill McLemore joined the cemetery board, and we are excited to have them join current board members: Ken Thornhill, Chairman, Mark Carroll, Vice-Chairman, Mark Ezell and me as we work to care for the cemetery. Each member brings special talents and abilities to the group and that makes for a good team. The Oakley Cemetery Board continues to work hard to keep our cemetery looking good and your comments are always welcome. Please email your comments to [email protected] or mail them to our new mailing address: P.O. Box 574, Gilbert, LA 71336.

If you would like to buy a plot, they are available for $200. If you need information about plots that you or your loved ones have previously purchased, please contact me at home (318) 435-5725 or cell (318) 837-9640.

Finally, please check out our NEW page at www.facebook.com/oakleycemetery. Nearly 800 individuals have joined our page and the feedback has been wonderful. You can find many interesting facts about the cemetery, resources for looking up your loved one's grave and pictures of the cemetery.

Thank you for your support to help preserve, beautify, protect, and provide for the continued upkeep and maintenance of our historical Oakley Cemetery.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Emfinger
