In the early 1500s, there was a Spanish Conquistador by the name of Hernan Cortes. Cortes and the Spanish leadership decided that they were going to conquer the Aztecs in the Yucatan Peninsula. If any of you are familiar with history, you may know that the Yucatan Peninsula had a lot of great wealth in resources.
One problem that Cortes faced was that for hundreds of years, individuals had attempted to conquer the Aztec people. Another big problem that the Spanish faced was that the Aztecs had far more resources than Cortes—Cortes had somewhere around 600 men, 16 horses, and 11 boats.
When Cortes and his men landed on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cortes understood something very important. He understood that as long as individuals think that there is a retreat and a way out of a situation, you will never get their best effort when it comes to the endeavor. And so, history records that he would point back to the ships and issue the order to his men to burn the ships.
If we are truly followers of God, there is no way out. We cannot be Christians and still turn to the world. We cannot stand fast in Christ Jesus when there are still other things in our lives that we cling to.
If we are holding on to a Plan B, understand that we really aren’t following God. There is no safety net. If we stand fast in and hold onto a safety net, then we need to rethink some things - that really isn't safety at all. There is no safety net... It's time to Burn the Ships.
