The God Who Pursues
The book of Jonah is not simply about a prophet running from God—it is about a God who relentlessly pursues people with mercy, purpose, and grace. Jonah tried to flee from the presence of the Lord, but God pursued him through the storm, through the fish, and through every uncomfortable moment that exposed Jonah’s heart.
What is remarkable is this: God was not only pursuing Nineveh… He was also pursuing Jonah.
Sometimes we think God only moves when we are strong, willing, and obedient. Yet Jonah reminds us that even in our resistance, God still comes after us. Why? Because God's heart is always redemption, restoration. He pursues cities, nations, families, and individuals who are far from Him.
And God pursues us too.
Jesus continues this same theme in John 6 when the crowds were focused on temporary things—bread, miracles, and earthly provision. But Jesus redirects them toward eternal rhythm and eternal purpose:
“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life…”
— John 6:27 (ESV)
The people immediately asked the question many of us still ask today:
“What must we do?”
Jesus answered with simplicity and power:
“This is the work of God, that you believe in him [Jesus] whom he [God] has sent.”
— John 6:29 (ESV)
The rhythm of Jesus is not striving—it is abiding.
Not performing—but believing.
Not chasing temporary satisfaction—but living from eternal purpose.
This connects beautifully to John 15, where Jesus reminds His disciples:
“You did not choose me [Jesus], but I [Jesus] chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit…”
— John 15:16 (ESV)
We have been appointed by Christ Himself to live fruitful lives and to go make disciples. The Christian life is not meant to be stagnant or self-focused. The rhythm of Jesus is a daily rhythm of:
believing,
abiding,
bearing fruit,
and willing to be sent...
God pursued Jonah.
Jesus pursued the disciples.
And today, God still pursues us with His Son—not just so we can be saved, but so we can become people who carry God's love to others.
May we stop running from the call of God and step into the rhythm of Jesus:
Believe in Him.
Abide in Him.
Bear fruit through Him.
And go make disciples for Him.
