Lesson 4: Living With What You Didn't Ask For
Background Scripture: Luke 2:15–19; John 2:1–5; John 19:25–27
Lesson Scripture: Luke 2:15–19; John 2:1–5; John 19:25–27
Key Verse "But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19 (NRSVue)
🌿 Lesson Overview
Life often brings responsibilities, challenges, and seasons we never expected. Mary certainly didn't ask to become the mother of the Messiah, yet she faithfully embraced God's divine purpose. Through every stage of Jesus' life—from His miraculous birth, to His first miracle, and finally standing at the foot of the cross—Mary demonstrated unwavering faith, trust, humility, and obedience.
This lesson reminds us that although we may not choose every circumstance we face, we can choose to trust God through them. God's purpose is often revealed in the very situations we never would have chosen for ourselves.
✨ Lesson Highlights
1. Treasure God's Work in Your Heart
(Luke 2:15–19)
After hearing the shepherds' testimony, Mary didn't immediately understand everything God was doing. Instead, she treasured His promises and reflected on them.
Application: Not every answer comes immediately. Sometimes faith means trusting God while we wait for understanding.
2. Trust God's Timing
(John 2:1–5)
At the wedding in Cana, Mary recognized Jesus' power before anyone else. Although Jesus declared His hour had not yet come, Mary still instructed the servants:
"Whatever He says to you, do it."
Those simple words remain one of the greatest instructions for believers today.
Application: Obedience often precedes miracles.
3. Stay Faithful During Difficult Seasons
(John 19:25–27)
Mary remained at the cross while many others walked away. Even in His suffering, Jesus cared for His mother by placing her in John's care.
Application: Faithfulness isn't proven only during blessings—it is revealed during suffering.
❤️ Life Application
Many of us are carrying situations we never asked for:
Unexpected illnesses
Family struggles
Financial hardships
Broken relationships
Responsibilities we never imagined
Like Mary, God calls us to trust Him anyway. Our unexpected circumstances can become opportunities for God to reveal His grace, strength, and purpose.
Remember:
> Your assignment may surprise you, but it never surprises God.
đź’ Discussion Questions:
What unexpected situation has strengthened your faith?
How can Mary's example help us trust God when life changes suddenly?
What does "Whatever He says to you, do it" look like in your daily walk?
How can we remain faithful when God's plan is difficult to understand?
🙏 Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us through Mary's life that Your plans are always greater than our own. Help us to trust You even when life takes unexpected turns. Give us the faith to obey Your voice, the patience to wait on Your timing, and the courage to remain faithful through every season. May we treasure Your Word in our hearts and confidently walk in the purpose You have prepared for us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
