God of inspiration, when I look around, there are so many people modeling a better way. The leaders working to care for their people, even when it’s less profitable. The children speaking out in halls of power to advocate for a brighter future. The everyday people bringing truckloads of donations after a disaster. God, let me be part of this crowd. Let their light ignite my own actions so I might be a light for others, too. With conviction I pray, amen.

A Message from Pastor Drew

Love Is Turning Over Tables

Yesterday we entered into Holy Week as we remembered Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem with shouts of "Hosanna!" We cry out to Jesus to save us, because we know he is the only one who can, has, and will continue to do so. After all, as we will see this week, it is Jesus' way of humble love that is stronger than anything this world has to offer and which not even death at the hands of the empire can stop.

Today is Monday of Holy Week. The church remembers what Jesus does just after his triumphal entry - flip the tables of the money changers in the Temple and drive out the people who have turned the holy place for worship into an opportunity for self enrichment at the cost of the poor.

Now, turning over tables and sending people out of the Temple doesn't necessarily seem like something love does. Yet, it is Christ's insistence on God's love for all people that motivates this action. Jesus knows that the only way we live lives of love is that God loves us first - and Jesus is here in the flesh to show us the depth and breadth of God's steadfast love that comes to us freely as grace.

Therefore, Jesus' mission includes turning over tables that profit some at the expense of many. Jesus breaks off the chains that some use to bind others in servitude and that we, in sin, bind ourselves. The love of God in Christ Jesus completely transforms the way we see and know God, ourselves, and one another - by the way, the Greek word for repentance is metanoia and literally means a transformed knowing...

“Jesus is that King. But in an astonishing way. We know that he is ultimately on his way to the cross. His kingship, symbolized by his station upon a humble c**t, is one of sacrifice and service. And yet, as Lord, he is not a helpless victim. He is in charge. He is working out God’s plan in this demonstration of royal authority. Even in the process of letting go of his life, he is in charge of the liberation of God’s people. He puts our lives before his own life.

Our calling, having recognized Jesus’ Lordship, is to emulate his regal imperative. To live our lives as he lived his, in service to—and perhaps even in sacrifice for—the lives of God’s people.”

—Rev. Dr. Brian Blount, from his commentary on Mark 11:1-11

Christ Lutheran Church, Georgetown Texas

CLC is held its first worship service March 30, 1947. It was Palm Sunday and a small group of 43 Lutherans gathered at the Cody Memorial Library Auditorium at Southwestern University.

Our first house of worship was built on the corner of Austin Avenue and 18th Street and was dedicated on March 14, 1948. The building still stands across Austin Avenue from the old Monument Cafe.

Expansion and growth required a new location. In July 1981, a groundbreaking took place on our current site. We began worshiping at this location in May 1982 when a portion of the building was completed. The finish out was done by church members in their free time. Our sanctuary was completed through the handy work of congregation members in time for its dedication March 27, 1983. The new kitchen, Red Room, link, and gym were added in 2004.

In 2017, we updated our audio video system and in 2018 dedicated our new digital organ. Christ Lutheran Church is a tribute to the faithful stewards that helped to build our church and make a home for all those who have, are, and will worship in this place.
