Our next book is "Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End" by Atul Gawande. Author and surgeon Atul Gawande considers how medicine can improve not only life but also the process of its ending. Prioritizing quality of life, Gawande shares examples of more socially fulfilling assistance for infirm and elderly patients and explores various models of hospice care that allow for a rich and dignified end of life. All are welcome to join us, email [email protected] for the Zoom link.

On the cusp of summer and a time of endings for many, it is a time when many of us look toward restoration and renewal. However, many of us have limitations whether they be physical, familial, economic, or unintentionally self-imposed. Rev. Alan Taylor will reflect on how we are called to improvise and even thrive amidst our limitations. uusg.org/upcoming-services.

Join us for our annual Religious Education Volunteer appreciation and Moving Up service this Sunday, May 31 at 10 am. Please show your appreciation for our teachers, nursery volunteers, advisors of OWL and Habitat for Humanity, and all who make our youth programming possible by honoring them with your presence. We will also celebrate our youth who are "Moving Up" from one class group to another. We have two seniors this year who will share what UUSG has meant to them as well as their future plans as they venture out into the world beyond high school. We are all one community and we would not be who we are without every one of you. Please join us in this commemorative celebration! There will be cake for the mole* and anyone else who would like some.

*Pick up "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse" in the UUSG library if you don't know this reference. You will be glad you did. uusg.org/upcoming-services.

On this Memorial Day weekend, Rev. Alan Taylor’s sermon will honor and remember those who have died in service to the ideals of this nation. We will also remember the many lives that have been consecrated in our Memorial Garden as we consecrate four additional Memorial Stones to be installed. At 11:45am, Rev. Alan Taylor will lead a ceremony to honor the individual lives whose stones have been consecrated by the congregation and to bury the remains of some of these beloved people. uusg.org/upcoming-services.

On this Sunday that we gather for our Annual Meeting, Rev. Alan Taylor will share a reflection on what he has discovered here among us these past nine months—and especially how we strive to open ourselves to both beauty and brokenness. Andy and Jenny Montgomery will share why they have decided to re-enter the Peace Corps and be away from our Congregation for 27 months. Please note that all members are encouraged to stay for the Annual Meeting that will begin very shortly after the end of the second service. Our Hospitality Team will have a spread for all who stay after the Annual Meeting, which is typically a half hour. uusg.org/upcoming-services.

Join us for our intergenerational service that features the distinctly Unitarian Universalist ritual of sharing flowers. Our children and the choir will take a special part of this service. We will also lift up how Mother’s Day is both a special day for many and a challenging day for many among us. You are encouraged to bring a flower to share at the front of the Sanctuary, but this is not required as we will have plenty of flowers among us. uusg.org/upcoming-services.

What happens when 30+ congregations speak with one moral voice? We are delighted to welcome Natasha Walker, our new leader at the UU Advocacy Network of Illinois (UUANI), to the pulpit. Natasha brings a unique perspective to our movement, combining two decades of strategic work in Corporate America with a deep commitment to the interconnected web of life. On Sunday, she will share her vision for UUANI’s three-pronged strategy of advocacy, activism, and resistance. Come hear why our daily actions are "inextricably braided into everything else" and how your engagement can help shape the future of our state. uusg.org/upcoming-services.
