During the Syrian refugee crisis, Michael and Kathleen O’Connor wanted to find ways to support Syrian refugees arriving in the United States. Instead, they were assigned Rohingya refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma), members of one of the most persecuted communities in the world.

In 2018, they founded Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA), which provides intensive tutoring and educational support to refugee students, many of whom have lost years of schooling before arriving in the United States. Now serving over 125 students, half of whom are Rohingya, they have much to share about how to support refugees meaningfully. Rev. Geezers Group! The self-named Geezers Group welcomes retired & semi-retired UUSG men for lunch at Harner's restaurant in North Aurora on the last Friday of each month at 12pm. As Rev. Alan Taylor returns to the pulpit this Sunday on this last of our summer services, he wants to know what questions are on your hearts and minds. Note cards will be provided at the beginning of the service and collected just before the “sermon.” He will offer his own responses to as many of our questions as he is able to during the service. Our Homecoming Service returns on August 30 with worship at 9:30am and 11:00am. Afterward, we’ll gather at 12:30pm for our 19th Annual Homecoming Picnic at Wheeler Park in Geneva. Fried chicken, mac & cheese, water, and lemonade will be provided. Bring a chair, a refillable water bottle, and your favorite dish or a yard game to share—sign-ups are open now at uusg.org/picnic.
