She told him Gen Z isn’t ‘leaving church’… they’re leaving anxiety.
It was Pentecost Sunday at Pirate’s Cove in Corona del Mar, California. Troy Anderson was researching for his latest investigative book, researching the fault lines in present-day American discourse, but found himself following an eager young crowd hugging the coastline.
They climbed over rocks to get to a hidden beach. Hundreds of people. Ocean baptisms.
Before she was next in line, Anderson interviewed a young woman named Kandis McGee.
Her words weren’t polished. They were honest: she believed the new generation was hungry for something different, and tired of living under the weight of anxiety and depression.
She also said something unexpected: faith was becoming more public again. In her words, it had “become a trend” to wear Christian clothing, post about faith, and pray for people.
And this wasn’t isolated. That 2025 Baptize America moment became the largest synchronized baptism event in U.S. history: 650 churches, 1,080 events, 27,858 baptized, 6,445 salvations.
