On October 31st, 1517, a German monk posted a document called the 95 Thesis to the Castle Church door in Wittenburg Germany. He wanted to have a conversation about the church's practice of selling indulgences. Many look back to this moment as the beginning of what is now called the Protestant Reformation. It was a perfect storm of historical events that led to major changes in the religious landscape across Europe. The most significant change was the translation of the Bible into the languages of the common people, instead of Latin and Greek. For the first time in nearly 1000 years, the Bible could be read in languages of the regular people.
Due to the rapid spread of these Bible translations and other wrtings by reformers, aided by the newly invented printing press, the Reformation spread across the whole of Christendom. The renewed interest in reading God's word changed the course of western history. The common chant of the reformation is "Semper Reformanda." It's a Latin expressson for "always being reformed." The idea was that God's word would continually reform the people of God as they turned to it as their authority.
We believe God's Word still transforms people every day. So instead of reminding ourselves once a year that the Reformation happened, we set aside the whole month of October to saturate ourselves with God's word.
Every October we celebrate God's word by reading, studying, and giving.
