Northwest Indiana Christian Women's Retreat (N.I.C.W.R.)

Northwest Indiana Christian Women's Retreat (N.I.C.W.R.) The sisters from Christ Baptist Church were Rev. Bertha Watson, and Marjoice Wiggins. Prior to the meeting, Sis. Sis. Hallelujah! We have been far from perfect.

In October of 1989, ten ladies from Christ Baptist Church attended—along with several ladies from the Church of Gary—the United Conference for Women in Traverse City, Michigan. Bernice Baker, Mariel Green, Genetha Hollingsworth, Doris Irby, Gwennita Jordan, Bertha Richardson, Sadie Shropshire, Lucille Upshaw, Rev. These sisters went to the conference expecting to be blessed through a weekend of wo

rshipping, praying, studying, and sharing with other Christian women from throughout the United States and the Islands. At the same time they were eager to observe the format of the conference so that they could initiate a retreat ministry for hurting women in Northwest Indiana. When the United Women’s Conference challenged the ladies to return to their respective homes and organize their own retreat or conference, the joy of the Lord overflowed in the hearts of the ten sisters as God seemed to confirm their desire to organize a retreat. After much prayer and deliberation, on November 3, 1989 an informal meeting was held at the home of Sis. Doris Irby to formulate and implement plans for a Christian Women’s Retreat to be held the following year (1990). Sadie Shropshire had done preliminary work on retreat planning; during that meeting she was asked to serve as chairperson for the first retreat. Shropshire’s God-given administrative ability, wisdom, and insight blessed the ministry immensely during its birth and subsequent growth. After prayerful discussion, it was agreed the ministry would be called NORTHWEST INDIANA CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S RETREAT (NICWR). The purpose of this ministry was defined by Sis. Genetha Hollingsworth as “To
bring together Christian women in a common atmosphere to share the Word of God, prayer, and common experiences (especially of matured Christian women) to help each other grow spiritually.” The ministry would focus on non-believers, new Christians, mature believers, inconsistent believers, and extended families. Of particular interest would be women with a myriad of demographics: various age groups, marital status (single, married, divorced, widowed), and eventually ethnicity. NICWR would also embrace women from other churches in Northwest Indiana. Little did we know that NICWR would begin to attract friends and relatives from throughout the United States. The general consensus was that NICWR would be incorporated with the state as a non-profit organization; however, since assuming an independent status as a group involved too many time constraints for the first retreat, we turned to our Pastor, Dr. Colvin Blanford, for advice. As a result, he graciously consented to allow NICWR to become a ministry under the umbrella of Christ Baptist Church. Our first retreat was held at the Spa Banquet and Conference Center in March, 1990. The Lord led 117 women to avail themselves of the opportunity to meet and mingle with other Christian women. Since then God has continued to stretch this ministry beyond what we felt our limit. We have been blessed to host retreats at various sites in Northwest and Central Indiana as well as Illinois. Our prayers and expectations continue to be spiritual growth and renewal for all of God’s women. We praise God for He has done exceedingly and abundantly above all that we asked or thought, according to His power that worked in us. However, God has been faithful. He has blessed this organization to minister to many hurting women who have returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to serve the Lord, their families, their churches, and their communities. We ask for your prayers that this ministry will continue to be all that God would have it to be, to the end that it will glorify Him, edify His church, and advance His Kingdom.

When God Disrupts Our Plans

God can use trials to redirect our path—what feels like disruption might be divine intervention.

RELATED SCRIPTURE
Psalm 119:71-72

Perhaps you’ve seen a TV show where a man is about to step in front of a moving vehicle. Then someone else races onto the scene, tackling him to prevent catastrophe. Stunned and indignant, the near-victim fumes at the rescuer—until realizing he’s just been saved from a far worse outcome.

Our trials can serve a similar purpose. It’s easy to get so caught up in daily routines or consumed by chasing a goal that we miss what God has in mind for us. When we’re this focused on our own desires, we become more vulnerable to making choices that don’t align with His Word.

But our heavenly Father wants the best for His children. He’ll go to great lengths to position us for blessing. That’s when we may suddenly find ourselves facing unexpected difficulty—a job loss, a health crisis, a broken relationship. We wonder, Why is God letting this happen to me?

Does this sound familiar? It may be that He’s protecting you from something you can’t see. Or drawing you back to Himself. The psalmist understood this and wrote, “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes” (v. 71). If you’re going through a trial, consider whether God might be redirecting you—disrupting your plans so He can implement His.

The Courage to Obey

The grace of our Savior strengthens us to share boldly and endure faithfully.

RELATED SCRIPTURE
2 Timothy 2:1-3
2 Timothy 4:17
John 16:33
2 Timothy 2:8

In today’s passage, the apostle Paul tells us to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (v. 1). He knew the Lord stood by his side and strengthened him so that the good news would be spread. And Paul moved forward in faith (2 Timothy 4:17).

In the same way, the Holy Spirit gives us the courage and power to obey God’s commands, so we can rely upon His might to carry us. As believers, we should …

• Share knowledge. The church not only possesses the good news about salvation; it also has the full riches of God’s Word. Many people have listened to biblical teaching and experienced the Lord intervening in their lives. To keep those lessons to oneself can leave unbelievers in harm’s way and deprive fellow Christians of necessary wisdom.

• Suffer willingly. Hardship is part of the Christian experience. Jesus tells us we will face tribulation, but we can take heart because He has already “overcome the world” (John 16:33). It is little wonder, then, that Paul reminds Timothy to stand strong in the Lord and see to it that the teaching is shared (2 Tim. 2:1-2).

Paul encouraged Timothy to “remember Jesus Christ” (2 Timothy 2:8). This also applies to us. When we focus on the Lord, His grace strengthens us to share boldly and endure faithfully.

The Blessings of Inadequacy

Our inadequacy drives us to God—and that's when we learn to lean on His power.

RELATED SCRIPTURE
2 Corinthians 3:1-6

Paul never claimed he was capable of accomplishing all that God called him to do. Instead, he learned to look past his own limitations to the sufficiency of Christ. We too can discover blessings hidden in our experiences of weakness.

Our limitations drive us to God. When we realize a situation is beyond our ability, we can turn to Him through Scripture and prayer for guidance and power.

Recognizing our need motivates reliance on divine empowerment. God never intended for us to handle things alone. We become adequate only as we draw from the Holy Spirit’s inexhaustible strength and let Him work through us.

By using unlikely people, God demonstrates what great things He can do. He delights in choosing ordinary individuals to carry out His plan. There’s no limit to what He can accomplish through someone willing to submit to Him.

Acknowledging our need challenges our faith. Paul says, “Our adequacy is from God” (v. 5). Those who trust this promise and step out in obedience will grow in faith.
Let the Lord work through you: Rely upon Him and allow Christ to live in you. He will replace your anxiety with contentment.

Overcoming Inadequacy

We all feel inadequate at times, but triumph is possible when we focus on Christ.

RELATED SCRIPTURE
2 Corinthians 2:14-17
Psalm 66:5

At some point, we all face feelings of inadequacy. In today’s passage, Paul asks a question that expresses this common struggle:
“Who is adequate for these things?” (v. 16). Even this great apostle understood what it means to feel insufficient.

Have you ever sensed God calling you to serve Him in a way that pushed you outside your comfort zone? Perhaps you hesitated because you didn’t feel qualified. If so, you may have missed an opportunity to see the Lord work powerfully through your weakness.

Feeling inadequate isn’t sin—it’s being honest about our limitations. However, using inadequacy as an excuse to avoid obedience is another matter.

When the Lord challenges you beyond your abilities, you face a choice: Will you focus on Christ and move forward in faith, or focus on yourself and withdraw in defeat?

God would never ask you to do something without empowering you to accomplish it. He doesn’t require perfection—just obedience. Each step of faithfulness is a victory, and you’ll discover what the psalmist knew: “Come and see the works of God, who is awesome in His deeds” (Psalm 66:5).

Our Protector

No matter what dangers lie ahead, our strong and faithful God will guide us to safety.
June 1, 2026

RELATED SCRIPTURE
Psalm 121:1-3

Psalm 121 describes the safety that is found in the Lord. Today and tomorrow, we’ll look at several verses to better understand how we are truly secure in God.

“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord” (vv. 1-2). When this psalm was written, robbers hid in the mountains, waiting for travelers to become their unsuspecting victims. Not only that, but wild animals also posed a threat.

Our lives can be like mountainous territory. Do you wonder what dangers lurk in the future?
Thankfully, the Lord is our helper; He is able to protect us, regardless of what lies ahead. He knows everything and has all the power necessary to rescue us.

“He will not allow your foot to slip” (v. 3). God has provided everything we need in order to avoid sin. The Holy Spirit directs and empowers us, and the Word lights our path. Yet at times, we choose to sin. Even then, He upholds us, enabling us to walk in His way.

These opening verses focus on the Lord’s ability to protect us. Whether trouble originates with others, external circumstances, or our own sin, we can find ourselves in danger and at risk. Thankfully, we have a loving Father who leads us to safety.

God Bless you and yours 🙌🏽

The Process of Sanctification

Spiritual growth can't be rushed—it's a journey that requires your patient, daily cooperation with God.

RELATED SCRIPTURE
Hebrews 5:11-14
2 Peter 3:18

Many modern-day inventions are designed to help us accomplish tasks more quickly. Not every process, however, lends itself to acceleration. Consider our growth in Christ, which is known as sanctification. Being a Christian is neither an event nor a quick fix. Rather, it is a journey. There are things for us to learn along the way, and while we may unwisely choose a longer path than necessary, there really are no shortcuts.

Sadly, there are people who grow little after salvation. Some aren’t discipled or encouraged in their faith. Others fail to pursue maturity through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and fellowship. But God’s Word says to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

Consider how spiritual development benefits believers. The more we get to know God, the better able we are to walk in obedience and live a contented, purposeful life for His glory. We also become more adept at discerning truth from falsehood.

Have you noticed any change in your life and character since you were saved? Your heavenly Father wants to mature you. So make a continuous effort to cooperate with Him by reading Scripture, praying, fellowshipping, and repenting of all known sin in your life.

God Bless you and yours 🙌🏽

Finding Rest in God

Can you remember the last time you drank cold water after being outside in the hot sun? Or maybe diving into a lake in the middle of summer? It feels good to be refreshed physically, and all of us have different ideas about how to get refreshed.

God’s Word tells us that God is like a Shepherd who takes care of us. He protects us from harm and He makes sure we’re nourished.

One of the jobs of a shepherd is to provide the sheep with refreshment. This is why the writer of Psalm 23 says the Lord leads him into quiet places and lush spaces. Those things were refreshing to his soul.

Have you checked on your own soul lately?

Sometimes when we haven’t been refreshed by God, we end up living in a hurry. We keep our souls and minds busy going from one thing to the next. We become anxious. After long enough, we begin to think there might be something wrong with us.

In John 10:11, Jesus says that He is the Good Shepherd, and we are His sheep. This means that Jesus provides the right path that we should walk, spiritual protection and guidance through prayer, and also spiritual refreshment for our soul. When we spend time with Jesus, part of His job is to refresh us.

But in order to do that, we have to follow Him into those quiet spaces. We have to leave the noise and notifications of the world behind us and learn the slow pace of Jesus. We don’t have to hurry in our time with Him.

When we learn to quiet our souls by removing distractions, we can begin to enjoy simply being with Jesus. When we learn to enjoy Jesus, then He will do His job of refreshing our souls that are parched and weary without Him.

So take some time today without distractions and spend time with Jesus. If you find that difficult, that is an indicator that your soul isn’t used to resting. Your life will be so much healthier and satisfying if you make it a daily habit to be refreshed by God.
