History in St. John

Donald Hubbard is recognized as the first Black designer in the shoe industry. Born in 1943 in Gary, Indiana, he developed an early fascination with shapes and colors, particularly in footwear. As a child, he spent hours sketching shoes, nurturing the passion that would shape his future career.

After finishing high school, Hubbard moved to New York City to study at the Traphagen School of Fashion. In the early 1960s, he began working as a freelance designer for several shoe manufacturers. He later became an assistant to renowned designer Herbert Levine, whose collections were featured in upscale boutiques and luxury department stores.

In 1966, Hubbard was appointed head designer at Mid-Atlantic Footwear Corp.. The role allowed him to live and work in Paris, where his creativity thrived. In addition to designing footwear, he launched his own shoe line under the name Kenneth Gaston Hubbard and expanded into jewelry and menswear design.

Throughout the 1970s, Hubbard continued to build his reputation, creating designs for Golo and the Shoe Biz department at Henri Bendel.
