Every former President had some issues
Former President Barack Obama is facing backlash after saying he can still admire George Washington while also acknowledging Washington was a slaveholder.
During an MS NOW interview, Obama said America’s story is filled with contradictions, explaining that Washington’s role in founding the country does not erase what he called a “profound deep flaw” in the Founding Fathers.
The comments quickly spread across social media, where many people criticized Obama for praising Washington despite his history of enslaving people. Others argued Obama was making a broader point about confronting America’s full history without pretending its leaders were perfect.
The debate comes as the country approaches its 250th anniversary and just days after the Obama Presidential Center opened in Chicago on Juneteenth.
What do you think can historical figures be admired while still being fully judged for the harm they caused?
