The recovery of the venerated copy of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God in 2012 marked one of the most significant spiritual events in modern Russia. This image is an exact replica (a *list*) of the legendary Athonite "Gatekeeper," which was brought to Moscow back in 1648 during the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. For centuries, the icon served as the principal shrine of the Novodevichy Convent; however, following the Revolution and the closure of the monastery, its trail was temporarily lost within museum archives.
For many decades, the holy image was preserved in the collections of the State Historical Museum. Although art historians safeguarded it as a historical monument, believers were deprived of the opportunity to pray before the original image within the walls of its home monastery. The situation changed in 2012, when, as part of the celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of Moscow's liberation from Polish invaders and the restoration of national unity, a decision was made to return the icon to the Church.
The ceremonial transfer took place on May 6, 2012. A procession led by Patriarch Kirill escorted the holy image from the gates of the Historical Museum across Red Square. This procession became a symbol of the restoration of historical justice and spiritual continuity. The icon was delivered to the Novodevichy Convent, where it was welcomed by thousands of pilgrims.
This second recovery of the icon in 2012 underscored the special role of the Iveron Icon as the patroness of Moscow. Notably, the transfer of the image coincided with the feast day of the Great Martyr George the Victorious, lending the event an air of particular solemnity. Today, the ancient image is housed in the Dormition Cathedral of the Novodevichy Convent and is accessible for veneration by all believers.
This event represents far more than the mere transfer of a valuable artifact from a museum to a church. For the Orthodox world, the return of the Iveron Icon became a sign of the Mother of God’s mercy toward the people, a reminder that holy relics return to those places where living prayer is offered. The "Gatekeeper" has once again taken up her place, guarding the monastery and the city just as she did centuries ago, bestowing comfort and hope upon all who approach her with a pure heart and sincere faith in the intercession of the Heavenly Queen.
