Matthew 18:20 is often cited as a comfort when only a few people arrive for worship or a meeting. The comfort is real: our Lord is not absent simply because a gathering is small. But in its immediate context, Jesus is speaking more specifically about His Church’s difficult and holy work of addressing sin, calling one another to repentance, and restoring the fallen.

Today’s Bible verse is taken from Matthew 18:20 ESV: (Jesus said) “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Labor Day’s Bible verse is taken from Colossians 3:23 ESV: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Labor Day gives us an opportunity to thank God for the work He places before us.

Our Bible verse this Sunday is taken from our Old Testament reading in church, Ezekiel 33:8 ESV: “When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.”

This Friday’s Bible verse, as we go into the Labor Day weekend, is taken from John 15:5 ESV: “ I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Have you ever gone to a bookstore and found yourself in the self-help section? There are basically books for every kind of condition where authors attempt to make you a better person. Admittedly, I’ve bought a bunch of these books in the past. Have they made me a better person? No and yes. Mostly no.

Genesis begins not with what we must do for God, but with what God has done: He created humanity in His own image. Every man and woman is therefore not an accident, a commodity, or merely the sum of abilities, accomplishments, or failures. We are creatures intentionally made by God and given profound dignity by Him.

This morning’s Bible verse is taken from Genesis 1:27 ESV: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

We sing about our love for God, we confess His holy name, we hear His Word and receive His gifts. It sounds easy enough to love God. John warns us that our love for God will never stop at words or an internal feeling. Love for God will be expressed by how we love the people that God puts in our lives

Today’s Bible verse is taken from 1 John 4:21 ESV: “And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

Jeremiah 8 is a sobering chapter. It carries a particular weight because Judah had been graciously warned; God had clearly revealed His heart and His justice. He called them to repentance and showed them where their paths would lead, yet they remained unyielding.

This Tuesday’s Bible verse is taken from Jeremiah 8:5 ESV: “Why then has this people turned away in perpetual apostasy? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.”

Our Gospel reading this weekend included our verse of the day. Jesus’ words sound backward to us.

Today's Bible verse is taken from Matthew 16:25 ESV: (Jesus said) “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

Today's Bible verse is taken from Matthew 16:23 ESV: But (Jesus) turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

In last weekend’s Gospel reading, Peter had declared Jesus to be “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” But this week, when Jesus spoke about suffering, dying, and rising again, Peter spoke up against it. He wanted a Messiah who displayed power, triumph, and glory—but not a Messiah who would die upon a cross.
