Christ Cathedral's Music Ministry serves the vast and diverse Cathedral Parish and the Diocese of Orange, the 8th-largest diocese in the United States. The Cathedral campus boasts some of the world's largest and most famous instruments including the Fred Swann Organ in the Arboretum, the 52-bell Carillon atop the Crean Tower, and the Hazel Wright Organ in the Cathedral nave. Staff musicians curren

tly include David Ball, Cathedral Organist and Acting Head of Music Ministry; and Lauren McCaul, Cathedral Music Administrator. Music has always been an integral part of the Christ Cathedral Campus, and many notable musicians have held positions on the staff including Dr. John A. Romeri, the first Director of Music and Organist for the newly-dedicated Christ Cathedral; Dr. Frederick Swann, the famed organist for many years of the Hour of Power and the Crystal Cathedral; Mark Thallander, Richard Unfried, Tom Leonard, Christopher Pardini, Janet Thorsen, and Don Neuen. A history of the organs and music programs of the campus is currently being compiled into a book written by Dr. David Crean that will be released when the Hazel Wright Organ is rededicated. The Fred Swann Organ in the Arboretum is a 1951, 4-manual, 82-rank Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ installed in 1996 and consists of 4,949 pipes and 6 Walker digital stops. The Hazel Wright Organ, built by the famed Fratelli Ruffatti Pipe Organ Builders of Padova, Italy, currently under renovation, is the 6th-largest instrument in the world consisting of 293 ranks with 17,106 pipes.

David Enlow is a “commanding” organist (The New Yorker), conductor, and teacher, Music Director of Park Avenue Synagogue, Organist & Choir Master of the Church of the Resurrection, and Assistant Conductor, Organist, and Repetiteur to the Clarion Music Society.

His solo recordings on the Pro Organo label include Pater Seraphicus, the complete major organ works of César Franck; Piano à l’Orgue, an album of piano transcriptions; and Bach on Park Avenue, recorded on the Mander organ at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York. David’s latest recording is an educational collaboration with Maestro Classics, Bach and the Pipe Organ, with materials for ages five and up.

David has taught church music, improvisation, and organ repertoire classes for local, regional, and national events of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the Royal Canadian College of Organists, and at the Juilliard School, from which he received two degrees. David also received the Fellowship diploma, with both prizes for highest marks, from the AGO; this resulted in his joining the committee on professional certification, which sets the standards for national organist examinations and grades them. David then served two terms as Dean of the New York City Chapter AGO, and has recently served as a judge for several competitions including the Schweitzer & Poister festivals and the AGO’s national improvisation competition. David studied the organ with Paul Jacobs, John Weaver, and John Tuttle, and improvisation with Gerre Hancock.

David has appeared in most all of New York’s major concert halls as an accompanist at the piano and organ with choruses, solo singers, and in performances of chamber music. David is also organist of the Clarion Music Society, and appears with the Clarion orchestra at the organ, harpsichord, and fortepiano.

Join us MONDAY @ 7:30pm!

In collaboration with the Orange County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, join us in the undercroft of Christ Cathedral for an informal program featuring the two organs found in the St. Callistus Chapel - the “French Salon” style pipe organ by Schoenstein and the new Digital Continuo organ by Charles Raasch. The Cathedral staff organists alongside the Cathedral Organ Scholars will present pieces to show off the beautiful colours of the instruments that perfectly complement the stunning new Chapel at Christ Cathedral.
