Galveston Central Church

Galveston Central Church Central is a creative community where radical grace is both believed and practiced. What if old and new weren't opposites? Welcome to Central.

What if tradition and innovation weren't necessarily exclusive? What if the church reclaimed her position as the cultural center of creativity? Central began as a grassroots movement in 1885, playing a key role in reaching out to the community, and growing to a membership of almost 900 people. Following Hurricane Ike, those numbers dropped dramatically into the single digits. In the summer of 2014

, a group of folks moved to Galveston with the hope of revitalizing Central United Methodist Church. While the membership numbers had shifted in recent years, the passion, excitement, and love for Galveston had not. And so 130 years later, we find ourselves as a new grassroots movement again. We officially re-launched in February of 2015, hoping to be a church known for our radical hospitality, irrational generosity, and unmerited love. We believe that if we can rebuild Central, we can offer hope and grace and imagination to the surrounding community and beyond. So we’re a new church, but sort of an old church too. Most importantly, we’re a church that’s different, a church that’s for Galveston, and a church that’s for you. We’re just getting started, and we invite you to come be a part of what God is doing here.

Jesus speaks in parables to ignite our curiosity about God and guide us into deeper engagement with God in the world. In the parable of the yeast, much seems hidden, but Christians are asked to hold the tension between the already and not yet, and between the God who stands with arms wide open and the God who hides in plain sight.

We are exploring the possibility of starting a United Women in Faith chapter, formerly United Methodist Women, at Central. In addition to fostering spiritual growth and leadership, United Women in Faith works for justice through compassionate service and advocacy to change unfair policies and systems that harm women, children and youth—from racial and gender injustice to economic inequality, climate issues and more. Join us on Friday, September 11th, at 3pm at the church as we meet with Texas UWF leadership to hear the details and talk to Amy Whitecotton ([email protected]) for more info.

Join our weekly Fall Bible study, starting next Tuesday, September 18th, at 6:30pm. We'll meet at Central in Grace Clinic for discussion led by Pastor Julia. If you'd like to read Amy-Jill Levine's book along with the Bible study, please purchase your book and have the introduction read by the first meeting next week.

We might expect Jesus to compare the Kingdom of God to something big and grand and imposing. Instead, he compares it to a mustard seed that grows into a plant that can offer healing, rest, and flourishing to the world around it. When we plant a seed, we have very little control over what happens, but the faithful actions of planting the seed and tending the sprout still matter. Similarly, as long as we continue to show up, to live in the way of Jesus, and to plant seeds, no matter how small our actions might seem, God will be working alongside us to co-create a world where all can flourish.

If you missed Pastor Julia's sermon yesterday, give it a listen by clicking the link below and ponder the parable of the mustard seed with us.

This fall, our pastors are launching a series of classes to dive deeper into each of these topics! First up will be Central 101, a chance to learn about all of the ministries that Central offers and how you can get connected to each one.
