A little something from six years ago...
The Dead Shall Rise
There are many legends around the life of Lazarus after he came forth from the tomb, although there are not many facts. It really must have been an interesting life for him to have taken part in one of the more fascinating miracles of all time. It would seem that whatever he did after that, he understood that there was a purpose to his life, and he owed whatever he had to Christ. I can’t help but believe that even though he was loved by Christ before he entered the tomb, he was a changed person when he came out.
The truth is that I am Lazarus and so are you. Paul tells the Ephesians and us today that “God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ”. Yes, we were all dead and now we live through the grace of God. It is up to us to now act accordingly. Once we became restored, we still have aches and pains, physically and spiritually. We still have a need for repentance and reconciliation. I had read once that the church is not a hotel for saints, but a hospital for sinners. I believe that is true and may be why Pope Francis has stated; “I see the church as a field hospital after battle.”
So now that we have been brought back from the dead, how are we to live? We begin by choosing to walk in the light of Christ as the gospel tells us. We daily have the opportunity to continue to walk in darkness or to live in the truth of the light. John tells us; “whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God”.
This Lent, let us channel our inner Lazarus and come forth from death to a life in Christs’ light!
