This Sunday the Trump administration is funding a 9 hour prayer festival focused on "America's Christian Roots", where Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio, and Mike Johnson are speaking at it on the idea of "Rededicating" that America is founded on Christianity.
I have preached and taught on this multiple times but it is important to speak up when "Christian Nationalism" continues to rear its ugly head.
When you encounter some person whose nostrils will flare and face gets red and says frustratingly, "America is a Christian Nation!" This is important information for you to have to refute that... (Besides just the glaring fact that the U.S. or any other country do not fully follow the ways of the Kingdom of God)
1. In 1787, the founders of the country wrote into the constitution itself that no religious tests shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the constitution.
Then four years later they drafted the bill of rights...
2. In the first amendment it says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
This amendment was written by Madison, and ratified by all of the states, the house and the senate, and signed by George Washington who was the president.
Now a lot of people know those first two, but are not always familiar with this third one...
3. Five years after the Bill of Rights, George Washington negotiated something called, " The Treaty of Tripoli". It was signed by George Washington, ratified by John Adams, and then approved unanimously by the senate.
At the time, Tripoli was a Muslim nation (Today it is known as Lybia) Muslims were rightfully terrified at the time because of the crusades. So, in order to broker the deal, the government under John Adams ratified this treaty, including article 11 within it.
Here is article 11 verbatim:
"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen,-and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
This article was written and ratified because the Federal government of the United States recognized that the people of Tripoli were terrified of religious persecution. BUT also because the founders of the United States had just won a war against an oppressive theocratic regime, that maliciously unified the powers of Church and State to enrich themselves and oppress the rest.
After this treaty was unanimously ratified by the United States senate, and signed by John Adams, its plain text was published for Americans to read nationwide. The public's response was basically, "Yes, of course. That is why we are here."
So, next time you hear politicians pontificating on your tv or online (or your neighbors/relatives/friends) that "We are a Christian Nation" as I am sure we will hear more and more as we approach election time and the 4th of July, please remember this important information.
Thanks to for summing this up in three points and I just tried to add a few tweaks.
