Then take the towel and break the bread,
and humble us, and call us friends.
Suffer and serve till all are fed
And show how grandly love intends
to work till all creation sings,
to fill all world, to crown all things.

What does it mean to connect with God in private? What does it mean to be a church, Christ’s body, in public? How do we treasure both faithfully?

Week 1: Open My Eyes, Lord
Paul saw the light of Christ shining around him on the road to Damascus. As individuals and communities, what do we have difficulty seeing? How does our perspective change when we review the world through the eyes of Christ?

Week 2: Open My Hands, Lord
We use our hands to pick up a child, to serve a meal, to play an instrument, to wipe away a tear. Jesus used his hands for healing and for deeds of great power, and the psalmist reminds us that we are always held fast in God’s hands. In Deuteronomy, Moses encourages us to open our hands in service to others.

Week 3: Open My Ears, Lord
Ancient Greek philosophy notes that we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. Jesus reminds us that we sometimes hear but don’t listen, listen but don’t understand. Opening our ears isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Week 4: Open My Heart, Lord
Listening to Paul’s teaching, Lydia opened her heart to God and was baptized. Her willing, trusting faith echoes down through the centuries as we witness her “open heart procedure.”

Week 5: Open My Life, Lord
Moses presents us with a choice: death and adversity, or a life cracked open to the love of God. Writing to the Galatians, Paul tells us that we have died to the law so that we might live to God. It is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us.

Spiritual Practices

Repentance: Remember your Baptism each day when you rise and before you retire by placing a small bowl of water in your bedroom, dipping your fingers in it and making the sign of the cross while saying the invocation: "In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit."

Prayer: We are drawn closer to God in contemplation and communication. Prayer is our half of a conversation with God. That means that prayer is not only speaking, but listening as well.

Fasting: This does not necessarily mean giving up all food for a day. More frequently it is the giving up or limiting of a particular food or food group (sweets, desserts, chocolate, butter, fat, eggs, etc.).

Works of Love: The intention of this part of the Lenten Discipline is to connect our faith in God's love for us with actions that are loving of others in the world.
