Jesus continues preparing His disciples for what is about to come. The cross is near.

Jesus tells them plainly that hardship is coming. They will face opposition, confusion, and sorrow. There will be moments when it feels as though the world is winning and God is silent.

He tells them that His leaving is actually for their good because the Helper, the Holy Spirit, will come. What feels like loss will become the doorway to deeper nearness. The Spirit will convict the world of sin, point people to Christ, and guide believers into truth. The disciples will not be abandoned to navigate suffering alone. Their grief will not last forever. Sorrow is real, but it is not final.

Again and again, Jesus lifts their eyes beyond the immediate moment. He reminds them that the Father loves them. He reminds them that peace is not found in easy circumstances, but in Him.

The chapter closes with one of the most comforting and honest statements in all of Scripture: “In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Jesus does not promise a trouble-free life. He promises His presence, His victory, and a hope stronger than suffering itself.

This week, we have made significant progress on the site work and are nearly ready to pour asphalt in the new parking lot. Curbs and sidewalks are going in to define the outdoor space. Inside, the HVAC contractor is working to finish ductwork and get our AC units fired up. Acoustical ceiling grid is also installed in the offices and education areas. Continued thanks and prayers for all of those who have helped get us to this point!

We live in a world that is increasingly connected & yet deeply lonely. Many people are surrounded by constant communication but still feel unseen, unknown, & disconnected.

Into that reality, Jesus speaks a different word. In what is known as the “farewell discourse,” Jesus tells His disciples to abide in His love.

Then Jesus says something remarkable: “I have called you friends.” And this friendship is not earned. Jesus reminds them, “You did not choose me, but I chose you.”

Their relationship with Him rests not on their performance, worthiness, or spiritual strength, but on His gracious initiative. From that foundation of love flows a new way of living. Jesus says, “Love one another as I have loved you.” And then He defines that love: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

Jesus’ words are filled with hope. We were made for relationship with God and with one another. And in Christ, we are not left alone.
