Live Oak Sangha

Live Oak Sangha We are guided by the teachings and practices of the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh. A Sangha is a community that lives and practices in harmony and awareness.

Our practice is the cultivation of mindfulness, out of which arises understanding, joy, compassion and transformation. As a Sangha, our practice is made up of many elements such as listening to the bell, walking meditation, smiling, embracing our suffering, mindful breathing, sitting meditation, and singing. We aspire to the well-being of all beings (inclusive of plant, mineral and animal) and asp

ire to bring mindfulness, as best we can, into our daily lives (that is, into our families, into our workplace, into our friendships, and so on).

Our Friend, The Bell

Sometimes our bodies may be home, but we’re not truly home. Our mind is elsewhere. The bell can help bring the mind back to the body. That’s how we practice in a temple. Because the bell can help us to go back to ourselves, back to the present moment, we consider the bell to be a friend, a bodhisattva that helps us wake up to ourselves again.

The Source of Happiness and Joy

Awareness of the breath is the essence of mindfulness. According to the Buddha, mindfulness is the source of happiness and joy. The seed of mindfulness is in each of us, but we usually forget to water it. If we know how to take refuge in our breath, in our step, then we can touch our seeds of peace and joy and allow them to manifest for our enjoyment. Instead of taking refuge in an abstract notion of God, Buddha, or Allah, we realize that God can be touched in our breath and our step.

Practicing the Five Mindfulness Trainings

“The Five Mindfulness Trainings are love itself. To love is to understand, protect, and bring well-being to the object of our love. The practice of the Mindfulness Trainings accomplishes this. We protect ourselves and we protect each other.”

An Important Practice

When we look deeply into our self - into our body, our feelings, and our perceptions- when we look into the mountains, the rivers, or another person, we have to be able to see and touch the nature of no-birth and no-death in them. This is one of the most important practices in the Buddhist tradition.

- Thich Nhat Hanh in Fear: Essential Wisdom for Getting Through the Storm

You may wish to arrive a few minutes early to enjoy slowly entering the meditation space and allowing yourself some time to settle.

Listen to the Wonders of Life

All the wonders of life are already here. They’re calling you. If you listen to them, you will be able to stop running. What you need, what we all need, is silence. Stop the noise in your mind in order for the wondrous sounds of life to be heard. Then you can begin to live your life authentically and deeply.

You may wish to arrive a few minutes early to enjoy entering the meditation space in silence and allowing yourself some time to settle.
