We regret to report the passing of Sister Inez Brooker.

Missouri Inez Thornhill Brooker passed away on June 8, 2026, in Gainesville, Florida, at the age of 90. Born in Eagle Lake, Florida, on December 28, 1935, she was a lifelong Florida resident who proudly called Gainesville home since the mid-1950s.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents, George M. and Hilda Polk Thornhill; her beloved husband, Marvin A. Brooker Jr.; her brothers, Paul and C.L. Thornhill; and her sister, Theresa Mickell.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Brooker; her son, Donald Brooker (Donna); her grandchildren, Wess Brooker (Heath) and Michael Brooker (Lindsay); and her great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Zoe Brooker. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Jewell Brooker, Sue Rowand, and Glenda Thornhill, along with a large family of cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Above all else, Inez loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She and Marvin were members of the University City Church of Christ since the mid-1950s. Gifted with the spirit of hospitality, their home served for decades as a warm, welcoming gathering place for countless church fellowships, Garden Club meetings, and tailgating for Florida Gators football games.

Inez turned her passion for travel and teaching into a distinguished, almost 70-year tenure with the Garden Club. As a Master Judge and Floral Design Instructor, her influence extended across the United States, Central America, and South America. The pinnacle achievement of her career occurred in 1994 when she and her close friend, Carolyn Smith, were asked to represent the Americas at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London, earning a Silver Medal for their floral arrangement.

A viewing will be held at the University City Church of Christ on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 12:45 PM to 1:30 PM. The memorial service will begin immediately following the viewing at 1:30 PM.

"...Be Holy..." -- 1 Peter 1:16 (NKJV)

Is God Evil?

There are critics and skeptics of Christianity who claim the God of the Bible is evil. This claim is not just wrong, it is self-defeating, philosophically incoherent, and collapses the moment one openly reads the Book they are critiquing.

If one is going to prosecute the God of the Bible, they must engage the God truly presented by the Bible, not the straw deity of internet atheism. The Bible’s God is Trinitarian, self-sufficient, existing in loving relationship within Himself before creation, lacking nothing, and needing no one. James says every good thing comes from Him: sleep, pleasure, beauty, laughter, etc. That framing is crucial. If “God is evil,” what is the comparative moral standard? To what is He compared? If the universe is purposeless matter, then morality is just your nervous system firing preferences - the complaint is filed with no court, no law, and no standing.

However, if a moral standard is real and binding across all people, then congratulations… you have just accidentally argued for the existence of a moral lawgiver. The accusation is either incoherent, or it proves God exists. But to go deeper, the terror of a needy, lonely, wounded God making capricious decisions is a terror we can rationalize since it’s just human pathology at cosmic scale. That is explainable. What should make us pause is the terror of the God who lacks nothing, who gains nothing from punishing anyone and who was complete and satisfied before you drew your first breath. When THIS God judges, it cannot be ego – He has nothing to win. That means when He acts in severity, it is because justice is real and He is its embodiment. The atheist prosecutes a deity that does not exist in the text they are quoting.

Who even has the right to determine what people deserve? Who has the sight to weigh the full arc of a civilization’s corruption, the downstream of unchecked evil, the futures that never happen because judgment didn’t come? The critic sits in a courtroom with a fraction of the evidence, and demands the verdict is overturned – that is baseless epistemic arrogance.

Perhaps most crucially, every other religion’s God stays hidden; conveniently invisible, and safe from examination. The God of the Bible, uniquely, when accused, enters the dock. He becomes human, submits to the conditions of his own creation, walks in it for 33 years, and is examined at close range by people who wanted to destroy Him. Roman judges, religious prosecutors, crowds, betrayers, etc. All hostile witnesses with murderous intent scrutinizing His every word and deed. And the verdict returned by His enemies: “I find no fault in this man.” The most morally examined life in human history belongs to the accused.

You want to meet the God of the Bible? His name is Jesus. Judge Him there, in the flesh, and then come back with an accusation. The concept of evil applied to this God is man standing in a house built by someone else, breathing air he did not make, using a moral vocabulary he cannot justify, and pointing at the architect and calling him wicked. The irony is hilarious and the case collapses, because the God being accused already answered this charge in person.

A Change of Focus

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” – Colossians 3:17

There is a spiritual revival of sorts taking place in the United States. Whether it is genuine or not, only time will tell. Many are looking to Jesus for meaning, purpose, or just to see if He is real. The religious community will present many forms of who He is, and all of them will not be a true representation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The world needs you to be who YOU say you are. Those of the world looking to Jesus need YOU to live your confession (1 Timothy 6:12). We members of the body of Christ are not called to be spectators – we are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Here are a few suggestions to help you make a difference:
Plan to be present for each assembly and event.
Be here early – remember, “Early is on time, and on time is late.”
Pray every day for the souls who are in our sphere of influence.
Invite as many people as you know to come to worship, class, and events.
Be proactive and positive in sharing your love and commitment to the Lord’s church.
Maintain a positive attitude and demeanor (in other words, SMILE!!).
Express thankfulness to God for all who are present in our assemblies.
Speak to every visitor you see, regardless of their age.
Remember – the lesson(s) heard may be the only Bible visitors hear at all.
Remember – you may be the closest thing to Jesus a person ever sees.
Remember – Everything you say and do is to be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, with thanksgiving.

With a change of focus, together, with God’s help, we can make a difference in the world.

Come, let us learn and grow together.

Swiftly We’re Turning

“Sir, we want to see Jesus.” – John 12:21

The world wants to see Jesus. The REAL Jesus, not the counterfeit Jesuses produced by so many. Not the “affirming” Jesus. Not the “political” Jesus. Not the “feminine” Jesus.

Son of God. Son of Man. Son of David. The Eternal Word. The Lamb of God. The Bread of Life. The Living Water. The Light of the World. The Good Shepherd. The Suffering Servant. The Prince of Peace. The True Vine. Rabboni. The Resurrection and the Life. The Risen Savior. Messiah. KING of kings. LORD of lords.

We must decrease; He must increase (John 3:30). Too often we get this confused. It’s time we stopped, because we are quickly running out to time.

Sister Ruth Johnson Carruth (1939) penned words we would do well to heed:

“Swiftly we’re turning life’s daily pages, swiftly the hours are changing to years;
How are we using God’s golden moments? Shall we reap glory? Shall we reap tears?

Millions are groping without the gospel, quickly they’ll reach eternity’s night;
Shall we sit idly as they rush onward? Haste, let us hold up Christ the true light.

Souls that are precious, souls that are dying, while we rejoice our sins are forgiven. Did He not also die for these lost ones? Then let us point the way unto heaven.

(chorus) Into our hands the gospel is given, into our hands is given the light. Haste let us carry God’s precious message, guiding the erring back to the right.”

Are you using God’s golden moments to show the truth of Jesus? Time is running out…

Come, let us learn and grow together.

Charles “Chuck” Gatton

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Charles “Chuck” Joseph Gatton, a devoted Christian, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday May 16, 2026, at the age of 90.

First and foremost, Chuck was a man of deep faith. He dedicated his life to Christ and was a faithful member of the University City Church of Christ. His commitment to his faith guided how he lived, how he loved his family, and how he treated everyone he met.

Chuck served his country with honor as a veteran of the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Chuck brought his strong work ethic into the business world, where he successfully owned and operated numerous Burger King franchises, serving his local communities for many years.

Chuck was the loving husband of Beverly Gatton, with whom he shared a beautiful friendship and life built on love and shared faith. He was a proud and supportive father to his two children, Charles and Lynne.
