Coral Ann Cooper of Gainesville is one of 14 local youth who graduated from the Seminary program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday night. Seminary classes for high schoolers are taught before school or in the evening. She was a student at PK Yonge, with dual enrollment at Santa Fe College, so this ceremony was her third graduation within a few weeks. In addition to learning more about the scriptures and faith in Jesus Christ, she found that seminary also taught many life lessons.  One teacher talked about “pokeyoking,” the practice of preparing everything possible in the evening, so that in the morning one can just go. Sister Cooper has been called to serve as a missionary in Campinas, Brazil.

The Gainesville FamilySearch Center, a free service of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had a booth at the recent Florida Emancipation Celebration hosted by the Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center. FamilySearch was instrumental in digitizing records of the Freedmen’s Bureau, which was created in 1865 at the end of the American Civil War to supervise relief efforts for recently freed slaves and includes a wide variety of information, making it an invaluable resource for African Americans trying to search their roots through slavery.

On Monday, May 4, members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are single adults aged 36 and above gathered for an evening of service. Pictured are four of the six who prepared meals for a few of our homebound members. They gathered at the 16th Blvd meetinghouse with the prepared food, then assembled the meals and delivered them as a group.

“Ministering is truly loving and caring for others as the Savior would. It is a way of being; it is the way of our Savior, Jesus Christ. When we minister, we are helping to answer each other’s prayers. We are the Savior’s hands.” Sister Kristin M. Lee, Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency

Our Stake leaders have invited their congregations and their communities to join a special fast this Sunday, April 19.

"We invite all members and friends to exercise faith in God and join together in prayer and fasting to petition our Heavenly Father for much needed rain.

Jesus Christ taught us that our Heavenly Father knows what we are in need of before we ask, but that we should petition him as a son or daughter to their Father for needed blessings (Matthew 7:7-11).

We can have full confidence that Heavenly Father will hear our prayers and will grant rich blessings on behalf of those who seek him in faith." - Stake Presidency

Last month our FamilySearch Center Coordinators (Greg Self in this photo) gave a presentation on FamilySearch resources to the Prime Time Institute, a community group that meets at the local senior center and also makes programs available via Zoom. The podium was shared with the Genealogy Librarian from the local public library, who was very positive about the functions available via FamilySearch. Do you know of other community groups who would like to have a guest speaker about family history?
