Every Monday morning at 6:00 am, men gather in person at Westside Baptist Church, and on zoom to pray. Here is our devotion for today.
Men’s Prayer June 1, 2026
The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me—a prayer to the God of my life.
Psalm 42:8
Our verse for this morning is in the middle of a Psalm that speaks of the distress of a man who is pouring out his soul to God. A soul that pants for God. A soul that thirsts for God. A soul that is cast down. A soul that is disquieted. A soul being attacked and mocked by enemies.
One of the best things about the Psalms is that they are raw and unfiltered. The whole range of human emotions and the struggles and triumphs of a man are on display for all to see. Psalm 42 tells us the story of a man seeking God while in the midst of troubles. Yet, in the middle of this Psalm, we see this remarkable verse 8. This verse speaks of our God who loves us continuously, day and night, in times of trouble and in times of joy.
How many of you have ever written a love song or poem? If you have, I am sure that you poured out your soul to the one to whom your song was addressed. Here, we have two songs; the Psalmist speaks of the song of God, and the Psalmist here sings his own song and prays his own prayer to God. And how is his God described? “The God of my life.”
How does this apply to you and to me? Our lives will never be complete until we acknowledge that God is the God of our lives. Our lives will never be complete until we live according to the will of the God of our lives, uninterrupted. The complete life from God is through prayer without ceasing, praying to God’s Son who is our High Priest. Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you, close enough to hear Him singing His love song over you.
