Two stories from our wider Presbyterian community remind us that faith, land, and justice belong together.

The Presbyterian Outlook remembers Wendell Berry, the Kentucky farmer and writer who died Aug. 31 at age 92. He taught that caring for land and communities are inseparable: “We have been given the earth to live, not on, but with and from, and only on the condition that we care properly for it.”

PC(USA) News tells the story of Walter Mack and the Gullah Farmers Cooperative Association on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island. Gullah farmers, descendants of formerly enslaved people, face structural racism and sell harvests at a loss. The cooperative helps Black farmers earn fair prices, feed their communities, and pass on culture and land: “In the Gullah culture, without land, there is no culture.” Its work is supported through the World Communion Offering, received on World Communion Sunday, Oct. 4.

Faith calls us toward higher ground: and toward faithful action in our communities!

Recent PC(USA) news highlights two ways Presbyterians are working for justice:

• Pastors Ray Roberts and David Lewicki remind us that churches can find common ground through our shared theological commitments, local relationships, and public advocacy. Congregations can host candidate forums and constituent meetings, educate one another, and work for affordable housing and other community needs. “All politics is local. So, conveniently, is every congregation.”

• “Evicting the American Dream,” a Presbyterian Disaster Assistance documentary exploring family evictions and housing injustice, has received an IMPACT DOCS Award of Excellence. The film amplifies the voices of children and families and is streaming on Amazon Prime and Roku.

As summer begins to turn toward fall, two Presbyterian resources invite us to pause, listen and care well.

PC(USA)’s “Pastoral care in the age of AI” explores how churches can respond thoughtfully to griefbots, voice-cloning scams and AI companions. The Church AI Toolkit encourages ethical discernment while reminding us that pastoral care is rooted in human dignity, embodied presence, relationship and accompaniment: not convenience or optimization.

A recent Presbyterian Outlook story by Rev. Doodle Harris shares what a college chaplain learned from 21 students who had left church.

Many said they no longer felt welcomed, heard, or valued. Q***r, transgender, and neurodivergent students described exclusion. Others felt discouraged from asking honest questions. One student said, “If I walk into your church and I can’t find anyone who looks like me or speaks like me, then your church only thinks it’s welcoming. It isn’t.”

Yet many of these students had not left faith. They continued studying religion, attending chapel, exploring their questions, and even pursuing ministry.

This is a call for churches to listen: and to make welcome real. At Grace Presbyterian Church, LGBTQIA+ people and families are genuinely welcome. So are neurodivergent people, people who are unsure, and people carrying questions or doubts. You do not have to have everything figured out before you walk through our doors.

Faith in action means caring for today’s needs while working toward lasting change.

The Presbyterian Hunger Program addresses hunger at its roots through grain banks, paralegal training for Ugandan women farmers, partnership with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, fair-trade coffee, and nearly 400 Earth Care Congregations.

As Rev. Rebecca Barnes says, “It’s not just about feeding people, although that’s crucially important. We are trying to work toward long-term change so people can feed themselves and find solutions.”

Grace’s Good Neighbor/Women’s Rural Health Project collection is one local way we can put faith into action. We welcome donations of canned beans, pasta, pasta sauce, apple juice bottles, canned meat, fruit, vegetables, white rice, instant oatmeal, cooking oil, 5 lb. bags of Maseca corn flour, cookies, and diapers.
