The Urgency of the Gospel
On Sunday night October 8, 1871, D. L. Moody was preaching at his church in Chicago on the topic, “What Shall I Do with Jesus?” At the conclusion of the sermon, he told the large crowd to take the text home and think it over. He said that the next week he would preach on the cross and ask them to answer the question they had been thinking on all week. But that Sunday night, the great Chicago fire swept across the city, destroying thousands of buildings, including Moody’s church, and leaving some three hundred people dead.

“I have never since dared,” Moody later said, “to give an audience a week to think of their salvation. If they were lost they might rise up, in judgment against me. I have never seen that congregation since. But I want to tell you of one lesson that I learned that night which I have never forgotten, and that is, when I preach, to press Christ upon the people then and there and try to bring them to a decision on the spot. I would rather have that right hand cut off than to give an audience a week now to decide what to do with Jesus.”

Salvation is literally a matter of life and death—eternal life and eternal death—and our presentation of the gospel to others should reflect that. It should be a matter of greatest urgency.

Today’s Gospel Declaration Principle:
If we realize the certainty of Heaven and Hell, there is no room for casual witnessing to the lost.

Luke 14:21-23 ESV
[21] So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ [22] And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ [23] And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.

The Power of the Gospel
The Word of God has a power to transform the lives of people that nothing else does. When we substitute the opinions and philosophies of man for the gospel message, we lose the power that makes a difference in the lives of others. Our commitment must be to faithfully proclaim the truth, no matter how out of step with society it seems to be. The world in Paul’s day was certainly not welcoming of the gospel, but he preached it without hesitation and without shame.

Charles Spurgeon said, “Take a maxim of Socrates or of Plato, and inquire whether a nation or a tribe has ever been transformed by it from barbarism to culture. A maxim of a philosopher may have measurably influenced a man in some right direction; but who has ever heard of a man’s whole character being transformed by any observation of Confucius or Socrates? I confess I never have. Human teachings are barren. But within the gospel there is a divine life, and that life makes all the difference. The human can never rival the divine, for it lacks the life-fire.”

The devil tempts us to update the message and take out the parts that are offensive to the hearer. God calls us to be faithful to proclaim the truth. This is the only message that changes lives. It will not be well-received by all, but there will be those who hear and respond when the gospel is given.

Today’s Gospel Declaration Principle:
Never give up the powerful weapon of the gospel as your tool to win the world to Christ.

Romans 1:14-16 ESV
[14] I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. [15] So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. [16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Why People Respond to the Gospel
As I’ve witnessed to people over the years, I’ve received all kinds of responses. Some quickly reject the message of the gospel, having no interest in hearing God’s plan of salvation. Some listen without making any commitment one way or the other. Some raise all kinds of questions and objections, more interested in arguing than hearing. Some listen and want to know more. And thankfully, there are some who immediately respond and put their faith in Jesus as their Savior. God has commanded us to be faithful to witness, but He has not given us responsibility for the results.

Why do people respond to the gospel in the ways that they do? God has given man the freedom to accept or reject the gospel message. I think it is wise to learn how to answer common questions people may ask and know how to lay out the plan of salvation from the Scriptures. But soulwinning is not an exercise in selling something. Soulwinning is a matter of faithfully delivering the message of the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Some people have hardened their heart to the gospel, and some allow the conviction of God’s Word to pe*****te their hearts. Our job is to share the message and then allow the Lord to work in hearts.

Today’s Gospel Declaration Principle:
Every day we should be faithful to witness to anyone we can and trust God to provide the results.

Acts 11:19-21 ESV
[19] Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. [20] But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus. [21] And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.

The Hidden Gospel
During World War II, America was concerned with the possibility of bombing raids or invasions. Although this never happened, a civil defense system was set up to prepare people in advance. One of the things they practiced was a “black out” drill which was designed to keep enemy airplanes from being able to identify targets by light from buildings nearby. Windows were covered with dark curtains or blankets, meant to be sure that whatever light was inside was completely hidden from the outside world.

The greatest gift that anyone can ever receive is salvation. The grace of God takes lost sinners and moves them from the family of Satan into His family. All this happens without our doing anything to deserve or earn it. You would think that anyone who had received such a gift would tell everyone about it, but in far too many cases, Christians accept the free gift of salvation and then never mention it to anyone. It’s like we are conducting spiritual black out drills, and it is a tragedy.

The Lord commands us to share the gospel and let our light shine before the world. In truth, the darker the world around us becomes, the more important it is for us to share with others the only hope for their future—salvation through Jesus Christ.

Today’s Gospel Declaration Principle:
When we fail to share the gospel, we are hiding its glorious offer from those who need it most.

2 Corinthians 4:1-4 ESV

[1] Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. [2] But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. [3] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. [4] In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Courage to Share the Gospel

After both of his sons enlisted in the Army to fight in World War II, Henry Gerecke, the pastor of a small church in Missouri, volunteered to join the Army as a chaplain. In addition to his skill with the Word of God, Gerecke spoke fluent German. He was often called on to work with German prisoners as the Army moved forward.

When the war ended, the Army asked Gerecke to serve as chaplain to the members of the German high command facing trial at Nuremberg. Some Americans opposed the idea, believing that war criminals like Herman Goering and Alfred Jodl did not deserve spiritual comfort. But Gerecke answered the call, even though doing so meant another year away from his wife and home. Eleven of the twenty-one tried at Nuremberg were sentenced to death. Gerecke continued to witness and minister to them up to the day of their ex*****on. He later wrote that four of them “died as penitent sinners trusting God’s mercy for forgiveness. They believed in Jesus who shed His blood for their sins.”

Most of us do not face the challenge of sharing the gospel with hardened criminals who have the blood of multiplied thousands on their hands. Yet, in truth, every sinner, whether his sins are small or great in our eyes, stands condemned to death and eternity in Hell apart from God’s grace. Let us never fail to witness to anyone because of fear or prejudice.

Today’s Gospel Declaration Principle:
There are no people whose sins are so severe that the grace of God cannot save them; we should boldly witness to all.

Live the Gospel

Charles Spurgeon said, “A man’s life is always more forcible than his speech. When men take stock of him they reckon his deeds as dollars and his words as pennies.” There is no substitute for a gospel witness that is matched by a gospel life. When we fail to live as we should, we forfeit what is meant to be a mainstay of our witness.

Paul instructed the Philippian church to live in a way that was becoming to the gospel. Our very lifestyle should adorn the gospel that we share with others. For example, how ridiculous would it have been if, when the shepherds came to visit Christ in the manger, Mary and Joseph were loudly complaining about the raw deal they had been given—having to bring Jesus into the world in a stable? There probably would not have been much worship taking place that night.

Even so, everything about our lives—our speech, our demeanor, our habits, our responses, our relationships—all of it, either gives credence to or discredits our message. If our lives do not reflect that our faith is real to those we meet, it is not likely that they will be interested in listening to any message we give them.

The central message of the Bible is that Jesus came to save us from our sins. And Christ has commissioned us, His people, to actively share this message. Yet if our lives are not what they should be, we will not be effective in winning people to the Lord.

Today’s Gospel Declaration Principle:
Live in such a way that your conduct matches and strengthens your witness to others.
