We welcome Fr. Paco on July 1, 2026.
As you may know, after 12 years with us Fr. Jose has been assigned to St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Bessemer. Our new priest will be Fr. Pachomius Alvarado - Garcia O.S.B. Fr. Paco was born in Perico, Cuba. He entered the monastery in Columbia and became a Benedictine monk. Later he came to the United States and entered St. Bernard Abbey. He was ordained into the priesthood in 2023 and comes to us from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Birmingham. His first day as our priest will be July 1st. We hope you will all give him a warm welcome to St. James.

Como saben, después de 12 años con nosotros, el P. José ha sido asignado a la Iglesia Católica St. Aloysius en Bessemer. Nuestro nuevo sacerdote será el P. Pachomius Alvarado-García O.S.B. El P. Paco nació en Perico, Cuba. Ingresó al monasterio en Colombia y se convirtió en un monje benedictino. Después vino a los Estados Unidos e ingresó en la Abadía de St. Bernard. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 2023 y viene a nosotros desde la Iglesia Católica de St. Francis Xavier en Birmingham. Su primer día como nuestro sacerdote será el 1 de julio. Demos le una bienvenida cálida a St. James.

Many Catholics notice that when a deacon is present at Mass, he is usually the one who proclaims the Gospel. This is not because the Gospel is less important, but because proclaiming the Gospel is one of the special ministries entrusted to the deacon by the Church.

The deacon is ordained to serve the Word, the altar, and the people of God. By reading the Gospel, he acts as a herald of Christ's message, reminding us that the Good News is meant to be proclaimed and carried into the world. Before reading, he humbly asks for the priest's blessing, and after reading, he reverences the Book of the Gospels with a kiss, honoring Christ who speaks through His Word.

This beautiful tradition highlights the deacon's role as a servant and messenger of the Gospel, calling all of us not only to hear God's Word but also to live it and share it with others.
