This is not just about physical abuse....there is also spiritual abuse. Whenever one person treats another person as if they are not important or are less than another person. (For ex. treating someone as if they are stupid, talking down to them, etc.)

7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him.[c] But for those who reject him,

“The stone that the builders rejected
has now become the cornerstone.”[d]

A cornerstone is the most important stone in a masonry type building because it is the first stone that is set, and all other stones are set in reference to that stone. This means that the cornerstone actually is the determining stone that causes the direction of the building's face. For example: If you want a building that faces south, but you set the cornerstone wrongly then your building may end up facing southwest or southeast when it is finished. Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian life, Jesus is faced correctly, so the question is are we following his direction?

7 In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.

It is a fact that most women are physically weaker than men, but God still considers them to be equal to men. This should make us understand that God does not consider weakness to be something that makes a person less, or physical strength to be something that makes a person worth more than another person. We are all God's children and equal in his sight!

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30 And we are members of his body.

31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”[b] 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

For most women "love" is their core longing. God is the only legitimate way to get our core longings met. God uses people and things as his resources to meet people's core longings. For guys as husbands are used to meet the core longing of their wives. They are united as one body....this is an equal union, not a master/servant union. The husband and wife are equal partners.
