If I bought a field and I emptied my bank account to do so, would I be complaining and sad that I had to pay that price for the field? There’s no way - if I believe what’s in the field is worth more than what I had in my bank.

I’m going to be happy that’s all it cost!

This is what Jesus is asking this rich man to do. To sell all that he had and give it to the poor. But instead of making him happy, that’s all he had to do - that made him very sad, because he doesn’t actually believe what he thinks he believes.

It’s not wrong to be prosperous.

But it is definitely wrong to put your faith in prosperity. This is the false gospel that the world preaches to us daily.

Richard Baxter once said: You would think that if a man even once heard what Jesus said about the unspeakable glory to be gained by following him and truly believed it was real, he would be overwhelmed with desire for it.

You’d expect him to ask, how can I be sure I have this treasure? How can I make it mine?

And yet people who hear of it every day and who even profess to believe it without question as one of the basic truths of their faith, seem to care and labor for it just as little and to forget and disregard it just as much as if they never heard of it at all, or did not believe a single word of what they heard.

If someone were to look only at the lives of most men and not hear their confessions, to the contrary, he would think either these men have never heard of heaven, or they’ve never heard of its Excellency and glory.

Luke is talking about the most important subject we could ever talk about - eternal life! And prosperity is identified as a specific obstacle that makes it hard for wealthy people to enter the kingdom of God.
