The Book of Revelation is complex and confusing. But it is much more understandable when we read the tenth verse of the first chapter carefully: "I was caught up in the spirit on the Lord's Day." John experienced his divine visions in the context of the Mass. With this framework, the entire book is easier to understand! St. Juliana, you can learn more by reading Dr. Scott Hahn's excellent book, The Lamb's Supper. It's full of great !

In the 1640s, Father Isaac Jogues of the Jesuits was tortured and enslaved by the Mohawks of North America. Miraculously, he escaped, returned to his home country of France, and healed up. Soon afterwards, he returned to preach the Gospel to his tormentors. Ten years after he was clubbed to death, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in the same area. Jogues' heroic actions and intercession planted the seeds of faith that eventually led to our first Native American saint!

Jesus' interlocutors seek to trap him by having him speak against the Temple or the Roman authorities. But Jesus does neither, and at the same time he points them to a deep spiritual truth: that since we are made in the image and likeness of God, we are first and foremost his. It's a good reminder that no political or social system owns us. We are God's first, St. Juliana!

Today, the Church celebrates one of her earliest martyrs. St. Ignatius of Antioch was the Patriarch of Antioch, and died in Rome. Oral and written traditions indicate he was either a direct disciple of St. John the Apostle or the disciple of John through a connection to St. Polycarp. When we read Ignatius' letters, there is a strong sense that he knows who he is in Christ Jesus, and what his role is. He's a great example of an early bishop who did his best to "hold fast to the traditions" that were passed onto him, "whether by word of mouth or by letter." -2 Thessalonians 2:15. May we do the same here at St. Juliana
