In Loving Memory of William Paul Nelson
William “Paul” Nelson, born June 10, 1967, passed away peacefully at his home in Salisbury, MD on August 22, 2026, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Paul was a truly remarkable and free-spirited soul who lived life on his own terms. Born with cerebral palsy, he never allowed his challenges to define him or keep him from doing the things he wanted to do. If Paul set his mind to something, there was usually no stopping him. He lived a life full of faith, friendships and adventures.
Paul loved his Lord and Savior and cherished his church family at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Fruitland, Maryland. When Paul moved from Glen Burnie to Salisbury on September 30, 2022, the members of St. John’s welcomed him with open arms and quickly became an important part of his life. Paul took great pride in preparing the church’s monthly newsletter. He was also an honorary member of the Salisbury Elks Lodge, The American Legion, and the Holly Center Angels. Paul was a proud Baltimore Orioles and Ravens fan. Those who knew him around town may remember seeing Paul scooting along with his flags flying proudly—a sight that brought smiles and made him unmistakably Paul. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, George Lawson and Julie Nelson, and his twin brother, Tony Nelson. He leaves behind his beloved Aunt Rosemary Flug of Darmstadt, Germany; his cousins Michael Nelson (Lori) of Salisbury and Melinda Sterling (Ronnie) of Crisfield, along with their children and grandchildren; and his special friends Don Disharoon and John Chenery. Don and John always made time to come to the Shore to visit Paul and take him along on their adventures. Their friendship meant so much to him. A special thank you goes to the staff of United Needs and Abilities, who cared for Paul with patience, kindness, and love—and who somehow managed to keep up with all of his shenanigans along the way. Their care and friendship were an important part of Paul’s life. Paul never let his disability slow him down, and he never seemed to understand the limits others might have placed on him. He had a way of touching people's lives simply by being himself. He brought laughter, determination, personality, and heart wherever he went. Many people were better for having known him, even if Paul never realized just how much of an impact he made.
Paul lived an extraordinary life, and he lived it fully. He will be deeply missed by his family, his church family, his many friends, and all those whose lives he touched along the way. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday September 13, 2026 - 11:30am at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Fruitland, Md with Pastor Shannon Harris officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s UMC PO Box 236 Fruitland, MD 21826 in Paul’s memory. Until we meet again, Paul. Keep those flags flying.
