Wow! Time flies. Just a short week ago we were putting the final touches on our preparations for "Free!" our One Day Fun Day VBS program for 2026. Now here we are a week later.
Here's a recap:
Our theme, "Free!" reviewed for our young VBSers, the freedoms that we have as Americans and, as Christians, who REALLY makes us free. The entire program was based on John 8:36 "...if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed!"
We learned about 3 of the primary freedoms Americans enjoy:
1. Freedom of Speech
2. Freedom of Assembly
3. Freedom of Religion
Each one important especially to Christians as we speak about Jesus, gather together to worship and practice our religion as we see fit.
One of our stories, demonstrated how forming good habits can keep you free, while bad habits developed while young, can tie you down.
Our craft was a USA! Bucket hat that our budding artists painted at the beginning of the day and were able to wear home. Some of our adults got in on this as well!
There were games in the morning and afternoon everyone lined up to test their skill at the patriotic corn-hole game and to see if they would sink lighted balls into containers.
Right before lunch our "Creature Feature" was presented. And, of course, we discussed the bald eagle. Other than being our national symbol, we learned several interesting facts:
1. The bald eagle, isn't really bald at all. At the time the bird was named, the word "bald" meant white haired or gray headed!
2. A fully grown adult bald eagle, stands as tall as some of our smallest VBSers, about 3 ft tall!
3. The wingspan of a fully grown adult bald eagle can have a wingspan of up to 7 feet! Because of their hollow bones, they can soar for up to an hour without flapping their wings as they ride the warm air currents that keep them aloft!
A special thank you to the volunteers who did an awesome job organizing registration, coordinating games, monitoring the craft activities, telling stories, singing songs and most importantly - as the VBSers voted - serving delicious snacks and lunch.
As each child left, they received a goodie bag with school supplies, some crafts to complete at home and a "twin pack" of chocolate chip cookies, courtesy of our resident baker!
Thanks so much for coming, for volunteering and for remembering that in this year that we celebrate America's 250th birthday, we are only truly and permanently free when we put our trust in Jesus who makes is "free indeed!"
