Dead and Alive (Colossians 2:8-15)

Baptism is our induction into the people of God. There is a mystery involved here. Though it is thru water, we are taking onto ourselves the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah. We die to our old way of life and take on new life. And this new life is possible because of Jesus triumphing by the cross!

Baptism is our induction into the people of God. There is a myster...

Athletes (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

We don’t have to be jocks to understand this analogy. Champion athletes, those who truly excel in their sport, must train hard and consistently in order to be ready for game day. How much more should we train for our walk of faith. If we are not ready, we will surely fail when the competition comes calling.

We don’t have to be jocks to understand this analogy. Champion ath...

The War Within (Romans 7:14-25)

The mind is not enough to keep the flesh from sinfulness. Reason cannot overcome our passions and impulses. The struggle against sin is a constant battle. But we are in bigger trouble if we are not having that war within! Thanks be to God who rescues us!

The mind is not enough to keep the flesh from sinfulness. Reason c...

The Church is a Body (1 Corinthians 10:14-17)
The Christian community is a body called out by God to be different than the
surrounding culture. We are to be the body of Jesus on this earth until he returns. Even though congregations differ in style, we are united around the one body of Christ and our mission together.

The Christian community is a body called out by God to be different...

Our Bodies are Temples (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)

For Israel, there was no place more sacred than the Temple. With this metaphor, Paul argues that what we do in these bodies matters. We are not souls entrapped in flesh waiting for death in order to make our escape. God created us as physical beings. We really do need to care for our bodies—physically and spiritually. One day our bodies will be renewed and be like Jesus’ resurrection body. Until then, let’s honor our Maker.

For Israel, there was no place more sacred than the Temple. With th...

Slaves of God (Romans 6:15-23)

In using the word picture of a slave, Paul is not approving of the institution of slavery. Rather, he acknowledges it as a reality in his world and redeems the concept by making it a voluntary choice to live under the Lordship of Jesus Messiah. In reality, we all live under the power of someone or something. Uniquely, to live as a slave to Jesus is to live in freedom!

In using the word picture of a slave, Paul is not approving of the ...

A Thorny Issue (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)
From Paul’s perspective, his “thorn in the flesh” may have seemed like defeat. Why wouldn’t the Lord heal him from whatever was tormenting him? Yet, without losses we don’t know victory. What can feel like defeat to us may be a means of revealing what we’re made of and what we really want. Perseverance can make us stronger and wiser.

From Paul’s perspective, his “thorn in the flesh” may have seemed l...

A Picture Beyond Words (2 Corinthians 12:2-6)
Supernatural experiences were part of Paul’s spiritual life. He did not seek these experiences but received them thru his relationship with the Lord. And he’s not allowed to tell the greatest one he had! There is something supernatural that happens within our spirits when we partake of communion together. Something beyond words, yet something very real that impacts our spiritual walk.

Supernatural experiences were part of Paul’s spiritual life. He di...

The Family of God (Romans 8:12-17)
We are a spiritual family: brothers and sisters in Christ with God as our heavenly Father. We do not function out of fear but in humble confidence—even thru suffering—that our God is King, that Jesus is Lord, and that we are co-heirs of his kingdom.

We are a spiritual family: brothers and sisters in Christ with God ...

Horticulture (Romans 11:11-24)

In describing God’s plan for Jews and Gentiles to join together as the people of God, Paul uses the imagery of a vine being grafted into the main shoot. As a result, no one should be arrogant, and no one should feel forgotten. The advancing Kingdom of God is the result of God’s grace and our faith in Jesus as Lord and Messiah.
