Hebrews 3:7-9

“7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.”

What a reminder to listen to the voice of the Father and don’t get angry when things aren’t going your way. Don’t blame God when you have temptations and trials because even Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. This is something I’ve had to remind myself repeatedly recently….God’s plan is perfect, even when I don’t like it.

This verse even reminds us that when people come against us then don’t get mad but remember that sometimes the people that know you best and have watched how you live your life may turn against you…. but God will never turn away from you. He is there to help you and desires that you follow Him. The people that followed Jesus and knew Him the best even deserted Him in His biggest time of struggle but we are reminded that we won’t ever have to deal with trouble alone because Jesus understands what betrayal is like and will be there for His children in our time of need.

John 2:19-22

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.”

This passage comes right after Jesus cleansed the temple. The religious leaders were asking Him what right He had to through out the money changers. The priests were likely getting kickbacks from the sale of the good in the temple so they were already angry with Jesus. Instead of telling them that He was the Messiah, Jesus used this opportunity to tell what is to come. He told them that they would kill Him but in 3 days He would rise again. The temple in this passage was His body not the actual flesh and blood temple they were standing in.

Reading this today, I was hit with the realization that the people got upset because Jesus was pointing out their mistakes and instead of responding with change they became angry. We see this in today’s society. If someone is living a life that is holy and righteous they are often ridiculed and ostracized. I feel they don’t want to be told of the wickedness around them. If you are attempting to live a life that brings glory to God then expect people to come against you. It’s been happening since the beginning of time. Even Jesus was attacked for calling out sin and trying to show people a better way. He was crucified for doing God’s work not for crimes He committed. They started the attack on Him when their feelings were hurt because He made them aware of their sins. Don’t take it personal when you are attacked. Just love them anyway.

John 2:13-15

“And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;”

Jesus was obeying the Law and went to Jerusalem to observe Passover. While there he found people in the temple buying and selling goods. It is believed that the priests allowed these people to sell with the court of the gentiles for part of the profit and the sellers of the goods charged outrageous prices to the travelers that came to observe Passover but may not have brought a sacrifice with them along the journey.

Benson’s commentary stated that “the priests and Levites very often sold the animals they had received for sacrifices to the dealers in cattle, at a lower rate, that they might sell them again with profit; so that the same sacrifices were often sold to different persons, and the spoils, or gain of them, were divided between the priests and the salesmen.” This is likely the process that angered Jesus. People were coming long distances to worship God but then once they got to the House of God they were being swindled by the sellers and the priests. They were attempting to follow the Law but man had corrupted the process. Jesus got angry because man was making a mockery of God’s House and the worship service.

When we enter the church we do so in reverence and to show God honor. We do so because we can because of the sacrifice Jesus made. Before the veil of the temple was torn in two we couldn’t enter a place of communion with God but had to wait on others to make the sacrifice for us. We relied on others but now we can go to God ourselves.

This is why we needed Jesus to fulfill the Law. We need a direct line to the Father. We no longer have to travel long distances and rely on corrupt people to pray for us or offer a sacrifice but we can speak directly to God. We can ask for forgiveness and direction ourselves and no longer have to go through the middle man. We have an advocate with the Father in Jesus and He sits on the right hand of the Father making concessions for us. He understands loss, pain and anger and when we cry out to Him….He listens.

John 2:9-10

“When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made w**e, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good w**e; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good w**e until now.”

How fitting that turning water into w**e was the first miracle of Jesus. If we go back to the Old Testament and in Exodus 7:20 we find Moses first miracle was water into blood. Jesus is the blood sacrifice for our sins. He is also the New W**e and Everlasting life. He is Living Water.

Matthew Henry says “the beginning of Christ's miracles was turning water into w**e; which may remind us of the difference between the law of Moses and the gospel of Christ. He showed that he improves creature-comforts to all true believers, and make them comforts indeed. And Christ's works are all for use. Has he turned thy water into w**e, given thee knowledge and grace?”

He not only gave the keeper of the ceremony w**e to drink but it was the best w**e he had ever had. Jesus doesn’t just give us partial victory and half truths but he redeems us and restores us to better than before. He tums us from something plain and ordinary into something extraordinary. I’m so thankful that He will make be better than before because without Him I’m nothing. I need Him to make me the person I was supposed to be. I need Him to make me special. I need Him because left alone I will not make it.

Titus 1:15-16

“15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”

Are we focused on the things that bring the Father Glory or just in seeking worldly pleasure? These verses tell us that we must stay pure, separated from sin. There are many that claim to be Christians but their works show a different story.

My prayer today is to be His. To be willing and obedient in all things He calls me to do. To be His and to let my life bring Glory to God, not shame. I know I may stumble but I will get back up. I recognize my imperfections and want to work each day on being what He wants me to be, not what the world expects. I want to be a light in the darkness. Amen 🙏

Job 34:3

“For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.”

Think about when you give a baby something new to eat and they’ve always been on the milk. Babies know what milk taste like but now you’re giving them something with a new texture and a new taste and they must decide if they will ingest it. This is the same thing when we are hearing something for the first time…… is this something worthy of us to allow into our soul and our mind? Is this new thing something that we will allow to shape us and changes or is it something that we need to spit out because it could corrupt us?

We must test the new thing and determine if it’s something that’s good for us or something that would destroy us. If it’s something bad for us, we should spit it out and avoid it but if it’s good for us, then we will allow it in and it will shape the person that we are. Let me ask you are you allowing just anything into your mind? Do you watch things on TikTok that are not godly? Do you read things that put you in a bad headspace? Do you listen to music that is not uplifting and encouraging? What are you allowing in that is shaping how you think and act?

This hit me this week because I’ve been watching more videos and less time in the Word of God. Because I’ve become distracted, I caught myself feeling agitated and angry over little things and realized it was because what I was allowing in was starting to come out in a negative way. Like the old saying says we are what we eat. We’re also what we see and hear. These things affect us and my prayer today as we don’t allow the world and the chaos to affect us in this way. Oh be careful little eyes what you see and be careful little ears what you hear because these things do shape who we are.
