Let's do it!

Read 1 John 4:19

There is only one reason we are capable of loving. Because He first loved us. The love we show Jesus and others only exists because He first loved us, we are merely responding to the love that we have already been shown.

In fact, in order to love Jesus well, our devotion to Him and our displays of love must come as a response to the love we have experienced.

As husbands, it becomes incredibly difficult to love our wives well if we are not experiencing fresh love from the father in our own lives. Why? Because responding in love or simply showing love to anyone must come as a joyful response to the love that we have encountered. Sometimes it’s hard to show others love or compassion because we have not experienced enough of it ourselves.

We can’t rely on our willpower or our best intentions to love our wives well. The love we show our wives day in and day out must come as an overflow in response to the love that we are experiencing from Jesus!

Jesus died for us while we were still His enemies!

He died for us while we were still dead in our sin.

He showed extravagant love all while we were utterly incapable of showing even a fraction of that same love in return.

In place of the death we deserved, He gave us life.

In place of the condemnation we deserved, He showed us grace.

Even in his darkest moment, being nailed to a cross, He said, ‘Forgive them, Father, they don’t know what they are doing.’

So what now?

Spend some time thinking of all the ways Jesus has shown you extravagant love. Think about all the ways He has protected you. Think about all the things that He could hold in front of your face, but instead, He bore them on a cross, forgiving you for it all. Now, spend some time in prayer thanking Jesus for everything you just thought of.

Today, love your wife and everyone else you come in contact with well because of this amazing love you have encountered.

Today’s Challenge - “The Big 2”

Your first challenge is to sit down with your wife and ask her “The Big 2” questions:

How am I doing as your husband?

What can I do better?

When your wife answers, don’t defend yourself or make excuses for anything. Simply listen, and take notes. After your wife is done answering, say thank you, and tell her that you are excited to begin making changes as a husband. Then spend a few minutes journaling your thoughts and how you are going to begin making some changes from what she said.

Friends are important. So important, they are worth more than life itself. The Bible teaches, "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." - 1 John 3:16-18

Bono, the lead singer of the famed band U2, shares a moving story of devotion between him and his lead guitarist, Edge (Adam Clayton). Childhood buds, Bono and Edge have seen it all.

The night before a large concert in North America, Bono received a death threat. The note threatened death to Bono if the band sang a certain song.

Bono showed the threat to his security team, who, after some investigation, deemed it a credible threat. Bono and the band had a decision to make: remove the song from the setlist or sing it.

The next day Bono decided: "We are singing the song."

That night, at the show, it came time to sing the song. The band began playing, and Bono started singing. As he got to the last verse, he would later admit, "I was anxious—afraid, really. I had no idea what was going to happen. As I went into that last verse, I took a knee, closed my eyes, and just sang... As the song ended, I opened my eyes and expected to see 30,000 screaming fans. What I saw was Adam's (Edge) back. I realized he had been standing in front of me, shielding me the whole time..."

Edge gave us a living, vivid example of 1 John 3. The essence of love is self-sacrifice, which has been perfectly manifested in Christ and should embody the lives of his followers. As John Stott reminds us, "It is precisely because [Jesus] laid down his life for us that we know what love is."

I hope you have a friend like Edge. More so, I hope you're learning to be a friend like Edge. Friends are forged in and for the fire.
