sion of the Orthodox Church in America's Diocese of the West and are under the omophorion of His Grace Bishop VASILY of San Francisco. We are committed to living a life in Christ, worshipping the Holy Trinity and witnessing to the Kingdom of God until the 2nd Coming. Our members come from very diverse backgrounds and are united in our love for God, for each other, and for our neighbor. All services are served in English using music from the rich slavic, byzantine and North American traditions.

This week marks the feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, a celebration that commemorates several significant events related to the true cross: its discovery by Saint Helen, its retrieval by Emperor Heraclius in the 600s, and its ceremonial raising within the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem.

“The Elevation of the Cross, celebrated on the fourteenth of September, commemorates the finding of Christ’s Cross by Saint Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine in the fourth century; and, after it was taken by the Persians, of its recovery by the Emperor Heraclius in the seventh century at which time it was “elevated” in the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem. From this latter event the “universal elevation” of the Cross was celebrated annually in all of the churches of the Christian Empire.... at the Elevation of the Cross the Christians make their official rededication to the crucified Lord and pledge their undivided allegiance to Him by the adoration of His holy feet nailed to the life-creating Cross”

This week we celebrate the feast of the nativity of the Theotokos, which coincides with the beginning of the liturgical new year. This timing demonstrates that the beginning of our liturgical life begins with the veneration of our holy mother, the bearer of life, God the Word.

“Orthodox Christians begin and end the liturgical year with celebrations dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whom we venerate as the Theotokos or “bearer of God.” On September 8, the end of the first week of the new year, we commemorate her Nativity or birth; on August 15, we close the year with the feast of her Dormition, her “falling asleep” and translation to heaven. As the hymns of these and other Marian feasts make clear, our veneration of Mary, the Mother of God, is basically a confession of our faith in the Person of her Son. All Marian piety, in other words, is an expression of christological dogma. It points beyond the Virgin herself and focuses on the significance—for her as for us—of the One whom she bore, our Lord Jesus Christ.”

According to Holy Tradition, this week on September 1st, marks the start of Jesus' ministry and the start of the liturgical new year, where he publicly declared His purpose and mission to humanity in the synagogue as recorded in the gospel of Luke.

“According to Holy Tradition, Christ entered the synagogue on September 1 to announce His mission to mankind (Luke 4:16-22). Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2, the Savior proclaimed, “The spirit of the Lord is upon Me; because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord...”

This week we commemorate St. Phanourios the martyr during Muslim occupation. His name is phonetically similar to a Greek verb "phanerono", which means "to reveal", and is said to help those who pray to him find lost objects.

“The saint’s name sounds similar to the Greek verb “phanerono,” which means “to reveal” or “to disclose.” For this reason, people pray to Saint Phanourius to help them find lost objects. When the object is recovered, they bake a sweet bread and share it with the poor, offering prayers for the salvation of saint’s mother. Her name is not known, but according to tradition, she was a sinful woman during her life. Saint Phanourius has promised to help those who pray for his mother in this way."
