One of the most dangerous side effects of consumer Christianity is that people begin evaluating churches the same way that they evaluate restaurants, stores, gyms, and name brands.
“Did I like the message?”
“Did it make me feel good and inspire me?”
“Did my family have a great experience?”
“Was the music enjoyable and/or songs that I like?”
“Was the coffee and/or snacks delicious?”
However, in the New Testament we are asked to consider a completely different set of questions:
“Are people becoming more holy?”
“Is the gospel being proclaimed faithfully and truthfully?”
“Are believers carrying each other’s burdens?”
“Is the church reflecting the character of Christ?”
“Are disciples being made?”
Consumerism convinces people that church exists for them.
The kingdom of God teaches people that they exist for Him. 💕
