Summer: A Good Time to do
Something Extraordinary in
the Faith
Daily prayer, weekly Mass,
monthly confession… and yearly
pilgrimage or retreat. The habits
of faith should be regular, but not
robotic. So, on occasion, we
should do something that connects
us to wonder, to doing something
new, to having a new experience
of faith. Get out of your rut!
That is what retreat and
pilgrimage are for.
A group of 20 parishioners had a
great day in Milwaukee praying
together and visiting beautiful
churches last weekend. We had a
holy hour with a great musician
that I know and celebrated the
Pentecost Mass at St. Josaphat’s
Basilica. It was really a beautiful
experience for everyone. Some
of the people on the trip said that
was the first time they had ever
done anything like that.
I’ve noticed that families will
spend thousands of dollars and
lots of effort on sports and
vacation, but with the faith they
are boring and routine. Effort and
creativity should be put into
connecting with and serving God.
Otherwise, we inadvertently say
that sports and vacation are
important, and that faith is dull.
To find interesting Catholic sites
along the way, take a look at
www.masstimes.org or
thefaithfultraveler.com/
us_shrine_map whenever you are
going on vacation.
There you can find beautiful
churches, shrines, and monasteries
near where you are going and
include the Faith in your travels.
You could serve at a food pantry
in Chicago, or see the miraculous
staircase of St. Joseph in New
Mexico. Stop by the unique
grotto in Dickeyville, Wisconsin or
go to the priesthood ordination
June 6th (11am at St. Peter’s
Cathedral, Rockford - no ticket
required).
So do something out of the
ordinary in faith this summer, and
you will likely encounter God
there in a new way.
