Dorothy Ann (Reller) Van Heel
1935 – 2026

Dorothy Ann Van Heel, of Freeport, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the age of 90.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Art Van Heel; her first husband, Lawrence “Swede” Hoppe, who passed away at a young age from cancer; her son, Gary Van Heel; her parents, George and Mary Reller; her siblings, Rosie Elfering, Rita Wicker, Norbert Schulte, and Justin Schulte; and her stepsister, Florence Roering.

She is survived by her children, Steven (Kay Snyder) of Sauk Rapids, Linda (Steven) Shook of Burnsville, Jane (Terry) Heidgerken of St. Louis Park, Lisa Mathreof Edina, and James (Missy Hodge) of Phoenix, AZ; her brothers, Ambrose and Gene Reller; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In Her Honor

Dorothy cherished the many dear friends and family members who filled her life and took great pleasure in spending time with them. She especially enjoyed playing cards and was a member of several card clubs, where her wonderful sense of humor and easy laughter made her a cherished companion. She was also a member of the Christian Women’s Club and the quilting club. She enjoyed bowling for a number of years in a league. Dorothy also worked at Jenni-O for many years.

Dorothy was also an exceptional baker, a talent she took great pride in sharing with others. She was particularly known for her breads and sweet rolls, especially her cinnamon and caramel rolls and Swedish tea rings, along with a seeming endless assortment of homemade bars and desserts. Her baking brought warmth and sweetness to countless family gatherings and special occasions and will remain among the fondest memories of those who knew and loved her.

Service

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the Mass.

Inurnment will follow at the church cemetery.
