On November 14 at 1:00, join anthropological archaeologist Allison McGovern, PhD, RPA, Cultural Resources Manager at Brookhaven National Laboratory, for an engaging program exploring the complex relationship between archaeology and Native American history.

The program begins with a seated presentation, followed by a guided talk and walk through LIM’s “Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island.” Discover how archaeological practices have shaped our understanding of Native American communities and the challenges that can arise when studying Indigenous histories and cultural heritage. McGovern will also discuss emerging approaches that center Native perspectives and offer hopeful possibilities for a more respectful and collaborative future.

Thanks to everyone who made Saturday’s “Meet the Artist” reception a success! The exhibit of images by Shinnecock photographer Jeremy Dennis impressed all our visitors. We were especially happy to welcome Nassau County legislator Debra Mule (https://www.facebook.com/legislatordebra.mule) , Village of Hempstead historian Reine Bethany (https://www.facebook.com/reine.bethany) and the Freeport Historical Society (https://www.facebook.com/groups/Freeporthistoricalsociety) , among others. And don’t miss the great story about Jeremy Dennis that was featured in Sunday Newsday’s Part II section. The exhibit, “Living Conduit—Indigenous Culture and the Present Day,” kicks off with a “Meet the Artist” Opening Reception Saturday, October 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The image below shows Jeremy Dennis hanging “Foundation;” the figure in the foreground symbolizes an ancestor made visible by disturbed ground. (In 2018 human remains were uncovered during residential construction in the Shinnecock Hills.) This Sunday we’ll be celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day with authentic music and stories. With Jeremy Dennis’ photography to inspire us, we’ll be learning about the people who are “Still Here” on Long Island. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at SNUUC or on Zoom (snuuc.org/worship), and will be led by Rev. Carol Huston. All are welcome.
